Elgato today announced the launch of its new EyeTV HD for Mac, offering users the ability to bring high-definition TV content to their Mac and stream it to iPhone OS devices using the dedicated App Store app.
Today, Elgato debuted the world's only DVR solution which provides full access to premium cable or satellite TV content on a Mac - EyeTV HD. Customers can now watch record, edit and enjoy cable and satellite in high-definition, including all their premium channels. EyeTV HD includes a unique dual-format capture mode that records in iPad and iPhone formats at the same time, allowing users to stream live and recorded TV to an iPhone or iPad using the optional EyeTV app.
EyeTV HD offers easy setup, simply requiring the user to connect the device to his or her cable box via component cables and Mac via USB. Simple configuration of an IR blaster for channel changing then brings the user's complete TV package onto their Mac, where Elgato's EyeTV 3 software handles navigation, editing, export, and streaming of content.

EyeTV HD also offers S-video and composite inputs to allow users to connect standard-definition sources such as VCRs and camcorders to video import and manipulation.

EyeTV HD sells for $199.95 with one free year of TV Guide service. Renewal service is available for $19.95 per year. Streaming to the iPhone or iPad requires the company's EyeTV App Store application, priced at $4.99.

I'll stick with my Hauppauge HD PVR. It has video out built in making recording game consoles a lot easier instead of just recording TV.

No sale

Elgato still hasn't managed to release a version of their "turbo.264 HD" that maintains audio sync; there's no way I'm throwing any more money down that hole.

This is an amazing release! Apple should have bought elgato a while ago and put features like this into the Apple TV.

Streaming to iPhone is cool and all, but I've already got an HDTV tuner for my Mac.... too bad there's no freakin' HD TV signal on the 4th floor of my stupid building, surrounded by dozens of other huge buildings..... *grumble*

Wonder how well this device would let you use your mac screen as a monitor for PS3/Xbox360. Expensive, but would allow for a much better picture than other options, (Adaptec Gamebridge) no?

So Eye-TV finally has real HD. That took long enough. They've been pretending to have HD for quite some time.

SlingBox is limited, as well.

Eye TV has had HD for several years. Not sure what you mean by "pretending to have HD".

I was kinda excited when I saw this but know when I think about it, I already have YouTube, abc player, netflix on my iPad. So I can't see how my tv channels can compete with the variety of content that's already on line. Granted that's not the only use for this device

It's an awkward sell here. The next Windows Home Server might have TV/DVR tuner support in addition to Time Machine backup from vendors. Streaming is done over Silverlight though.

This is a nice value add. However, being a U-verse customer, supposedly AT&T is working to bring this functionality to the iPhone and 'other devices' - hopefully this will include the iPad. The difference being AT&T did not say that the U-verse app update would include the ability to stream live TV programming but DVR recorded programs will be able to stream. So I'll just wait patiently for the updated U-verse app release as this won't cost me anything.

Could this be used to stream other videos (i.e. DVD rips, or any other videos which weren't recorded by the EyeTV) to the iPhone? It would be useful for me just for that. - or is there any other way of doing that without iTunes.

Composite and S-video aren't HD, yet that's all their products offered. So no, they've never had HD. They just liked to act like they did.

This is nice and all, but makes me wonder, why no HDMI? Why have 5 cables instead of one?

Likely the fact that Apple has yet to incorporate USB 3 into their machines. USB 2 isn't fast enough for HDMI, which is why you see products like the Blackmagic Intesity Shuttle only supporting machines with USB 3.

Wow!

I'm a customer with an eyeTV 250 - It's had HD output from over-the-air stations for years. Now, finally, they release a box that will hook to my DirecTV HD Receiver. Oh, wait, I need FIVE CABLES to connect the satellite box to the little eyeTV box - NO HDMI?

HUH?

And I had to find out from a blog instead of a marketing email from Elgato themselves - I might have pre-ordered the box if I had gotten a response from all my complaint emails.

Can somebody please explain to me how this device differs/is similar to Slingbox? I am currently using a Slingbox. Does this do anything my Slingbox doesn't?

hdmi certification. it's purpose is to record hd content, including premium copy protected content. there's no way hdmi would get certified on this product. same with the hauppauge hd pvr. only component on that one, too.

Does anybody know if any company makes a 12-16 port USB hub. I starting to run out of ports. I've got a printer, graphics tablet, 2 hard drives, the iPhone, a iPod plus my mouse and keyboard sticking out of two usb hubs connected to my iMac. I'd love to have this plugged into my iMac but I don't have the ports.:(

Copy protection. Devices like this and the Hauppauge DVR exploit the analog hole.

No. Get Air Video from the App Store.

Last time I checked, your Slingbox wasn't a PVR.

Why can't they allow HDMI input? Is this just due to HDCP and the copyright Nazi's that don't want you to be able to record TV shows without renting a DVR? I would get a TiVo, but the whole guide and On Demand with Verizon's FiOS TV requires the Motorola box, so a cable card just doesn't cut it. And what happens if 3D TV actually starts to roll out, I guess this component box will be useless?
