Seagate have recently announced hybrid drives, but they are yet to be available.

According to Seagate they will be much cheaper than real SSDs and deliver performance that is 80% faster than normal 7200RPM drives.

This is really sounding promising, atm I do need 250GB+ space, because I run OSX, bootcamp and vmware, and I can't really afford paying $700 for a 250GB SSD.

It seems like the drive is having a 4GB SSD partition and a 250, 320 or 500GB 7200RPM drive and according to a graph shown on their site, it will cost approximately $75 more than a conventional HD.

This is all speculation, but I'm really looking forward to see prices and performance on these drives. If it's 80% faster than the current 7200RPM drives and costs less than $200 (for a 500GB), then I'm definitely gonna get one!

edit: found the prices: The Momentus XT is available in 500GB, 320GB and 250GB capacities, with suggested retail prices of $156 (£108), $122 (£84) and $113 (£78) respectively.

There's a thorough review on anandtech.
The 4GB SLC NAND is used only as a read cache. The drive controller apparently "learns" what data is read frequently and stores this in the NAND. It greatly speeds up application launches and boot times but as you might expect, not random reads or writes.

Still, until SSD prices drop significantly, this is a great alternative.

Just read the review on anandtech, sounds very promising!
I'm just not ready to bite the $1000 bullet to get a real SSD and I need the 500GB storage, so I'm probably gonna get one of these as soon as the are available here!

I now have a 5400RPM drive and it seems like this is gonna give me an almost 100% increase in performance!
