i am wondering if either the tomtom or magellan carkit will work for the non gps ipad?

what do you guys think? you would have to cut down the car kit and mod it so you can mount the ipad on it. but do you think the ipad well recognize it as a gps?

Well, I just tried docking an iPad with a Tomtom. Mechanically it seemed to dock just fine, but the tomtom utility said it wasn't docked. I couldn't even get audio out.

However: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/912798/

I guess YMMV.

Update: Experimented with my iPhone and the Tomtom. It seems that although the phone docks with the Tomtom's connector just fine, the electrical connection isn't made until you push the top edge of the phone under the Tomtom's retaining 'clip'. So I'm guessing there must be a microswitch or something in the Tomtom's pivoting dock connector. Obviously that wasn't happening with the iPad due to it's height.
