If MBP high res 15" is 1680 by 1050 and the dell u2410 is 1920 x 1200, will I notice much difference in terms of extra screen space?

i don't know how to exactly explain it. but in short, yes you will notice a difference since theirs more space to spread out the pixels?

But in terms of having more space for indesign palettes etc will there be much more room?

Would seem that there are an extra 540,000 pixels on the 24" which would give it about an extra 30% screen space than the MBP (which would have 1,1764,000 pixels) which just doesnt seem a great deal extra for a screen that is so much bigger...

Also - is this a good monitor to get for teh new MBP? Any other suggestions for around £500 (24"-27")?

So I have both. I have the high-res 15" MBP, and I also have the 24" cinema display. You definitely notice the less pixel density. But I think your question is more around "can you fit lots more on the screen?" And to that, the answer is not really... Of course by having two monitors I double the amount of screen real estate I have, but as far as just comparing how much I can put on the screen of each monitor, it's really not that much different. Of course, with less pixel density on the 24"er, it's much easier to read from a few extra feet back.

You tell us. Here is what 30% looks like.

Thanks - so theres not really a huge increase in extra space, but point taken on having the MBP screen as well to use in combination, so I suppose you could argue the whole 24" screen will be extra space!

The main things you'll get out of using a U2410 are a more accurate display, wider color gamut, better viewing angles, larger fonts, more adjustments for ergonomics, and a variety of connection options for various devices. There's more to be gained than just extra pixels.
