How to check if a port is open and how to open one

How do i check if a port is open on my mac? specifically ports 80, 11031, and 11235-11335

Open a terminal window and type

netstat -an

how do i open up a port

I have an att modem with no port and a mac os x 10.5.8 and i cannot play Heroes of newerth because my ports are not open. I scanned for open ports in network utility and nothing showed up. So far Heroes of neerth is the only application i am having trouble with. I need to open up ports 80, 11031, and 11235-11335.

PLEASE HELP ITS APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!
