Clear out and RE VAMP a really old Ibook...help!

I have got my daughters very old ibook. (The bulky white one!)
2 questions.

Its Mac OSX Version 10.4.11
Memory 512
Processor 1.33 ghz

I would like to clear the whole computer (back all her stuff onto an external HD)
Then just use the computer for Garage Band. (With a keyboard and amplifier.)

My question is... How do I back up everything to the HD
How do I clear the computer back to nothing but the apps ie factory settings

Can I update Garageband on this system? And if not am I missing out on much by not having an up to date version
