Linux on iPod - What for?

What would be the purpose of running Linux on an iPod? What extra features does it have and what can it do?

If I had to guess....more codec support. WMA, maybe OGG. The iPod has some nice hardware....its software is another matter. Apple is being too pissy with the codecs it supports.

So you think it's just more of a compatability issue for file types? No like games or anything? lol 😀

Don't think it would make a good server of personal computer. 😉

Of course they do say you can put Linux on anything, and the MicroSoft Intelligent Toaster with Crumb drawer does look like a good Linux candidate.

I just don't understand why people would want to install it then? Other than to say they have Linux running on their iPod?

I think it's more to say "We came. We saw. We installed." and that's where it will end.

Want to type on an iPod? It sounds fairly tedious doing it with the wheel.

I'm going to agree with this. I think it's called TOO MUCH FREE TIME. Though that's what the Linux community is about, experimentation. Kinda reminds me of skaterboarders; they're always looking for the next challenge.

iPAQ Web servers aren't too uncommon, and I even got a Palm to serve NNTP at one point, so why not? 😀 All we need is for someone to make a FireWire-Ethernet Bridge!

hmm...it certainly has a large hard drive, and it can run linux...i believe i've seen usb to ethernet adapters somewhere?...that would be so awesome to have a website about ipods served by an ipod...
