I had a JB 3.1.3, then I updated straight to iOS 4 GM. Everything went fine. Only problem is I cannot use data. I can make phone calls, use wifi etc, but cannot use my 3G network. I know Im not the only one with this problem, how can I fix this? Thnx.

I'm on Telus in Canada. I fixed the problem. First time I installed iOS I did the update method. I went back today and did the restore method and everything works the way it was meant. :)

thanks! im glad i saw this! i too was jailbroke 3.1.3 and did the update last night to ios4 and noticed NO 3g at all. I was freaking out. I will try doing the restore and see if it fixes. Did u restore from backup or as new phone? I really dont wanna do it as a new phone and loose all my texts and stuff.

I'm from Argentina and I had the same problem, my 3G network didn't work. So I made a backup (security copy, sorry for my english), then I restored with "Shift + Click Restore" on iTunes (in Windows) and selecting the iOS 4 ipsw (if you downloaded it from iTunes, C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\).

And finally, I restored the config with my backup (security copy, NOT RESTORE WITH IPSW) and the 3G network works 100% :D

Bye!

I was able to fix the issue with a full restore, and everything seemed to work fine....then this morning same problem again!!!!!!! Anybody has a permanent fix?

Solved! I have completely fixed this problem without losing any data (not that i've noticed yet anyway).

First, let me summarize the problem and briefly address the known solutions. There are multiple issues people are having with the update that -HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR PROBLEM-. Some people had theirs in airplane mode which apparently gives them a "no sim card" after update. not our problem. Some people can reset settings not our problem.

Our problem is corrupt APN settings after an upgrade, which can be worked around by installing mobileconfig updates or using the "iPhone Configuration Utility" to temporarily overwrite our APN settings. This is a temp fix that only makes 3g work, no MMS or Visual Voicemail.

We know that completely restoring the phone and setting it up as new resolves the problem. A lot of us are unable to restore any backups without re-introducing the bug. A lot of us do not want to lose our app data so setting up as new phone is out of the question. Some people have figured out how to set up as new phone and import SMS messages from corrupt backup to new backup. This is a good solution if SMS is the only thing you want…However, some of us want ALL our app data.

Now for the solution! First, go in to settings on your phone and uninstall any custom profile you may have installed to temporarily fix the APN.

Now, perform a full backup of your phone (you may want to delete your previous backups or move them out of the directory so that you're not confused with multiple backup files in your backup directory.

Go to your backup directory ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/random-backup-name-here/ and delete this file 8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858
That file contains our corrupted APN information.

Now RESTORE YOUR PHONE and restore the backup. It will fully restore and then give you an error, ignore the error, it worked. Sync your phone to get all your apps back. 3g works, visual voicemail works, mms works, and i have ALL of my app data! all my contacts, all my photos, all my sms messages! BAM! I RULE!
If for some reason you don't have that file in your backup directory (i have no idea, maybe they are named differently with different backups) you can find it by entering the backup directory in the terminal and running the following

Um, how do I find my backup file/directory???

Just wanted to post that this worked. I restored my phone, and sure enough, my data features work! However, I didn't have any of my old stuff (texts, pictures, etc), but after deleting the file specified and restoring the phone, I had all my stuff back along with data working.

Also, to find the file, I simply searched for it, and when no results were found, I searched in Computer (which is the entire hard drive), and after a minute or two, the file was found.

No Data Fix

When I used my jailbroken iphone and I updated to ios4, I lost my internet, mms, and visual voice mail. The only way to fix this is to do a complete restore and set up as a new phone. the way to do this is:
1. Hold the lock button for 10 seconds.
2. While holding the lock button press the home button for 13 seconds.
3. release the lock button.
4. make sure the iphone is plugged into itunes.
This will erase everything and start over. Firmware, software, everything. I beleave this is the only way to get data back.

Your apps you can xfer from Itunes to your reset phone, and your contacts can xfer from outlook if you have them backed up. I would not use a previous backup to restore your phone.

This worked for me and all data now works, not just internet. MMS, and voice mail works as well. The problem is with a corrupt APN and this is the only way to fix it without waiting for a ios4.1 to come out.

Bad APN: Try Using a DIfferent SIM from Another Carrier

This is weird. I have two JB'd & unlocked iphone 4's; one from Telus, with a Telus SIM; and one from AT&T, with a trimmed down Rogers SIM. The Telus one worked fine after JBing. The AT&T one with the Rogers SIM showed a strong 3G signal but had no data service. I couldn't perform the restore because 4.0.2 just came out, so I decided to swap SIMs. The Rogers SIM game me a SIM error in the Telus one while the Telus SIM worked fine in the AT&T one. Next I took the SIM from my Rogers JB'd iPAD and tried it in the AT&T one. No registration but no SIM error. Then, I put all three SIMs back where they started.

Low and behold, now the 3G data works fine with the Rogers SIM in the JB'd and unlocked iPhone 4 (4.0.1 OS). I guess using the Telus SIM successfully in it fixed what was likely a corrupt APN file issue.

It would be interesting to see if this test was a fluke or whether it can be replicated among friends (assuming that not everybody has a couple of iphone 4's with different carrier plans).

Dude u rock... U seriously saved my life!

WORKS! If u have gotten this far this far u have no choice ;) honestly feels like my phone gets better signal now. Just seems like less interference.

3GS IOS 4.1 jailbroken/unlocked

Hi there, I followed the instructions from Trejodaniel and i still have no 3g, no APN settings, no MMS.

Was I supposed to restore from back up?

or do restore.

THEN restore from backup after that?

I'm running IOS 4.1 and used jailbreakme.com and then i ultrasnow

Solved!...

What do we run in Terminal if we can't find it?

Still got not 3G, no MMS. This sux, jailbreakme have take a while to resolve this.

I have read all over the net and cannot resolve this issue with my iphone 3gs.

I tried backup, delete the file, then restored from backup. Same issue.

I am wondering if its because when i first got my phone it was locked and never used with the original sim card?
I then jailbroke and unlocked it which allowed the phone to make calls but no 3g.

still having problem

i tried the above, by deleting the file and then restoring but it didn't work. i don't want to do a fresh install because i want to keep all my texts and data etc.

can anyone suggest anything?
