Ok, I know nothing about nothing when it comes to Macs and music software/equipment. We have a Mac G4, not sure what the current OS is, but I am going to get it upgraded.

For my boyfriend's birthday, I am looking to find a music software production program. He had been using Cakewalk Metro up until our computer crashed a couple years ago. He really wants to get back into it, but when I looked up Cakewalk, I saw that Metro is quite outdated and most current cakewalk products are for windows. So can anyone please, please, please tell me what an equally good music software is (by the way, he makes mostly drum type electronic music via keyboards and drum machines). I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks!

Hi leikela47,

My suggestion is to visit OSX Audio. Specifically, I'd try posting a question on the Recording/Music Production forum. Great group of folks and (generally) very respectful and helpful to folks with questions like yours.

For anyone who's not an audio newbie, lots of great information and discussion.

Best,
Logicat (Also, Logicat on the osxaudio forum).

try reason

Hi there,

if he's into dance stuff then Reason is a fairly good bet. The company is Propellorheads. Software is called "Reason".

Generally speaking, though, if you want top quality production software, get Logic by Emagic (now owned by apple)

I'd go with a combination of Propellorheads Reason & Ableton Live.
They are a pretty good combination for dance music with bands such as The Crystal Method and The Prodigy using Reason heavily on their most recent albums and likewise with Sasha, BT, Andy Page and Evil 9 using Ableton Live for Live gigs etc.

Alternatively Logic Audio or Cubase SX will also serve your boyfriend well 🙂

Thanks everyone, although now there's so many to chose from! I have no idea what to look for so I have no idea what would be the best option! But at least i have some choices! Thanks again! 🙂
