For my last thread here: I found a search engine that might be better than Google

Yes, this is going to be my last thread here, as I am sick of the problems people have with me on the forums. (See the message in my sig.)

Well, Google is perhaps the most recognized search engine out there, and arguably the best. Though I found and tested a new search engine, which makes me think that Google needs some revisions.

The new search engine is Comet Systems. I typed up a review/test with Comet Systems and two other top search engines - Altavista and Google - in which I do 5 different searches, from autobiographies to videogame specifics, and conclude with the search engine that I seriously think came out on top.

You can read my review here: http://andrej.gadgetgaming.com/reviews/comprel/internet/searchengines/1/. I'm sure that people will still disagree with me, but perhaps this review and other's comments about the new search engine will influence someone.

(Plug: To friends that have been far more helpful to me than the few troublesome that still exist on here, I'll keep my personal website updated several times a week to let you know what's going on. I'll be at White Chrome Standards. Otherwise, I'll be checking out this thread for feedback and other comments and see if I can give some remaining insight where I think it should be. See ya.)

Well, even though we might have had our disagreements... though to be honest, I'm not sure if we have... I'm sorry to see you go. However, all I can say is, if you can't stand the heat... Maybe you'll find another forums that better suits you, but I doubt it. People are people. And some will always suck. Can't really change that.

I for one will miss ya King Cobra. I never had any problems with ya, and I thought we shared similar points of view quite often (glad to see I wasn't on your "enemies list" for lack of a better expression!), with you making some excellent points in some of the threads. I'd ask you to come back and reconsider, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do and I respect that.

Oh, and to be somewhat on-topic, I have never heard of Comet Systems, but will definitely be checking them out now - thanks for the head's up.

Take care and keep in touch...

When this thread dies off, I'll be outta here. The people that keep me from staying in the kitchen know who they are...but for reassurance, you two are safe, i.e., you aren't one of those people. In the meantime, I want to see what others think about Comet Systems, because I think it has quite a bit of potential to compete with other search engines.

This is just a forum, I think you're taking these "arguing" problems way over the top. I don't know what your problem is with those people, but I'm sure they don't care about it as much as you do. Also, why all this fuss about you leaving? just leave...

You can't win every argument, and it's a FREAKING FORUM, not something that your life depends on, so chill...

Oh, and your review, didn't know about Comet Systems, thanks for the new bookmark.

I'll second that! Lighten up, man!

Hey there, I'm sorry to see you go.

Although I don't recall commenting on any of your threads, I do believe that most people have something positive to contribute to any forum, including you.

Yes, it is frustrating dealing with people who don't bother reading the post through, who argue just for the sake of some entertainment - not because they really disagree with you - or who freak out because they can't believe that others don't share their point of view, which by the way always happens to be the only correct one.

But hey, that's life. You'll find people like that everywhere in life, not only on this forum, and from all cultures too.

The best advice I can give you in situations like the above is not to take them too seriously. Why allow close minded, immature people like that to get your blood pressure up?

As one wise sage said "Never argue with an idiot, they'll only bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience!"

I can understand some of your grievances KC. People can be over sensitive, and argue for arguments sake. But I’m sure we all piss each other off for one reason or another, that’s just how it is.

Mfacey, Applexilef, yes, it’s just a forum, but that still doesn’t change that what is said on it can get right up your nose at times.

come on, I think you got to take this in stride. There are bounds to be arguments here and there but you got to let them go. I think you have contribute a lot to this forum and its too bad that you have to do this but that's the way it is.

As for comet systems, it would be interesting to see how they would match up to Google in the long run.

Well, I'm on his 'enemies' list, and, to be quite honest, I don't remember any of the 'arguements' that I've had with King Cobra. Looking back as far as June, I can't see where I've even replied to a post of his. Off the top of my head, I don't remember anything he's ever posted.

I'm not saying that I was never critical of something he posted (I guess I was), but I find it strange that someone could carry a grudge for so long over a discussion about computers on an internet message board.

Anyway, I hope he finds a way to deal with his anger... it's really not healthy.

Yeah seriously, KC is taking things a bit far. If he doesn't like posting here, then don't post. Simple. I don't know you personally, KC, so it doesn't matter to me, personally. But even if it mattered dearly, it's still your decision, no matter what I think. No more of these "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" comments, either. Walk away if you don't like it, and stay if you do. Its like any other place you walk into. Good luck with wherever on the net you end up. If I see another King Cobra, I'll know it's you.

I know this thread is about search engines...*ahem*....but that sounds a bit "thin." You don't even need to have a goodbye thread. I was a little bothered that you felt a desire to make one.

To be off-topic to an already meandering thread, but it was news to me that Neserk got banned. As a frequent poster to the political forums, she was a familiar voice to me and I assumed her schedule precluded her posting lately. I am rather shocked to hear of her banning, even at this late date.

To KC, I do not post that often in the majority of the threads here, so I can comment little on the legitimacy of the reasons for your departure or the conduct of many members I do not associate with, but I wish you well.

I also echo the sentiments of some others in this thread who stress the fact that Macrumors is a voluntary endeavor. I love this forum, although I am sure some find my opinions less than enlightened from time to time. I hope that you will not hang up your hat on principle and still visit (and post) from time to time. I will say that although I have officially been a member about 18 months or so, I lurked around since late 2001 and valued many a posters opinion even w/o a written confirmation. Such is the nature of a forum such as this, so I implore you not to take the negative experiences you may have had too seriously, there may be many who have benefitted from your contributions.

In any case, I wish you the best of luck.

I haven't been here very long but I must say this community is by far the nicest mac community I have seen.
I understand your point completely but I do think though that you let it get to you far to much and that you are handling it all the wrong way.
Rules of discussion include that when your "partner" is not listening to you and answering your points you let it go. It's not worth discussing things with those kind of people. Get over it and move on.

There are very few people that I have met that I can talk to in an interesting and benefitting manner. I just don't talk to the others. So should you. It's just a learning process.
I for one think it's sad that you leave this forum because of this, very unnecessary.

Appreciations to Applexilef and mfacey for showing me perfect examples of why I don't bother having debates on here... the first person uses all caps for a "freaking forum," and the second person uses all exclamatory sentences, but both of them urge me to chill or lighten up. (Wash, rinse, and repeat, and you get what the less self-contradictory forums members call "part of life," and I understand that.)

Now if a mod wants to split the topic, then I don't have a problem with that. But I honestly expected only the first 2 or 3 posts to be about my little blurb on leaving and the rest to be a heated debate on Google vs. Comet Search. Come to think about it, a mod should split up the posts and topics appropriately into two.

Interesting... I went to check out the Comet site and it is blocked from from my work computer. Can't imagine why they would be blocking a search engine, since I can get to Google, AltaVista and any other search site. They had to actively block this site.

KC, any reason why that would be that you know of?
Anything on the site that is different, or would be considered inappropriate content?

Darn...

Now I'm going to have to think of something else for the New Year -- since harassing King Cobra until he quits has already been taken/accomplished this year. http://forums.macrumors.com/attachme...id=11368&stc=1

No point in sticking around if all you do is get angry and/or frustrated with the experience here.

There's better things to do with your life that are more likely than not to put a smile on your face.

Goodbye, and good luck.

I never visit Google's website; I use the Safari Google bar, so unless and until you can insert other search engines into said bar, I'm most likely a Google user out of habit/convenience.

And on the second note, I've seen plenty of heated debate tossed around here, mostly in the Political Forum where I know you were somewhat active. I think you've been a pretty good contributor to that and other forums and I cannot remember ever taking offence to anything you'd posted.

I was unaware that Neserk was banned, but her language and attitude was often very intolerant (in the Pol/War forums at least) and I can see how a moderator could make the decision that keeping her around was more trouble than it was worth. To be honest, I'm surprised she lasted as long as she did.

MacDawg, that's odd. I know that Comet Systems sets their default preference to allow all content in the search results, including adult material. Try here. That's their preference section, though I'm not sure if that'll help. (Probably not.) Or, try search.starware.com if you are still getting blocked.

The preference link was blocked too, but search.starware.com worked... sort of. It came up with no graphics (boxes with the red X). But I was able to search from it.

Strange.

Of course, I'm at work using XP, so that could explain a lot of things.

Comet systems are better known for their Comet Cursor spyware.

Comet do not actually have a search engine, they just pass through results from Yahoo's Overture with one major difference: Overture results indicate which links are really ads, but Comet do not tell you which results are paid placements.

Comet seemed to work fine. I like it.

KC, I have no idea what all this "quitting MacRumors" is about, but you're kind of coming off as a crybaby. It's just a forum, post or dont. Who cares? Making a big stink about leaving is just asking for attention.

Complaining about people arguing with you is kind of silly--that's what happens on forums.. There's people here I dont like, but it doesnt keep me from voicing my opinion.

Just the fact that you take things so personally is befuddling to me. But, maybe it's good that you're breaking off from here. I know I should. I'd get more work done.

You can "change it" but not through safari or any apple product. I use Safari Keywords to search a number of different sites, from Yahoo to ebay.

If that is the case, I don't think I would use it. Might as well use the Overture site.

I'm assuming I'll be added to your list of irritating people for this, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get over that. And for the record, this is aimed at more people than just KC - he was just the lucky duck that started this.

Just to cover all the bases here, it was a bit 'sneaky' of you to put your random "I'm leaving" thread mixed in with a question requesting help of other members about software. I can only imagine that you don't care one little bit about the software. If it's a real issue, I'm sure someone else will bring it up sometime and maybe get the questions answered. The thread itself was concocted to be an off-topic irritation. As for us splitting it, I have no intention of spending more time working on something you've created in our forums if you have no intention of being a participating member any more. I have better things to do with my time, as do the other moderators around here. It's a shame that you feel you're unable to visit and be hospitable any more, since in the past you've shown yourself to be a member in good standing and helpful to other people. I guess something has happened to change that - nothing I can do about it other than help you on your way out.

In regards to that, suicide-by-cop on our forums seems to have become a fun way to "go out in style" lately, which has left a few of us a bit baffled. If you have problems with the way the site is being run, or feel that the administrators and moderators of the site are being unfair against you in some way - bring it up privately with us, instead of letting it fester. It does nobody any good if you just get mad all by yourself for things that could change, but you do nothing about changing them. And for that matter, if you say you're done posting on the forums, why make a post saying that? Isn't that a direct contradiction of the statement you're trying to make (or not make, for this matter)? If you're done, just be done, and go away. It makes less work for everyone, including you, and it means that you won't have a hostile post against you when you're trying to make your last stand.
