Ok, Proximity sensor, I've had enough..

So Apple gave a press release about the signal strength issue, great, big deal, I've got a bumper on my phone for protection, planned on having it there since day one anyhow, so its not really an issue for me..

My biggest frustration, that wasn't even addressed in their press release, is this damn proximity sensor. I'm hanging up the phone with my cheek, dialing numbers, adding contacts, starting facetime, muting the conversation.. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. If I even move the phone SLIGHTLY while talking, the screen lights up and I start pushing buttons with my face..

At first I thought maybe I was just holding it against my face differently, but after having used it for a solid week now for regular phone calls, this has happened to me WAY too many times.

I certainly hope this new software update will boost the proximity sensor through software changes or whatever they need to do to make it work RIGHT, becuase if it's a hardware issue, or an issue of where it's located now, (moved slighly from the previous models) then I'm going to be extremely disappointed with my phone as a phone..

I want it to work the way it always did..
 
Completely agree! I randomly added a call the other day and I know for a fact Im not doing anything differently... this needs to be fixed ASAP!!!
 
I agree!! I keep pressing the dumb Speakerphone button when it's against my face! It's so annoying!
 
This is more annoying for me than the antenna problem. I randomly put people in speakerphone and dial others from my contacts. It sucks and I am hoping a fix is coming soon. The proximity sensor problem would drive me to return my iPhone before the antenna problem.
 
No issue here! Have you actually tested it to see if it's working??

I agree 100% Antenna has never been a problem for me.

The proximity sensor issue is the #1 complaint on the board-
Over 66,000 people have viewed and 675 people have posted on the Proximity Sensor thread.

In comparison, the antenna/signal issue thread only has 22,000 views and 231 posts.

PROXIMITY SENSOR IS THE BIGGEST FAULT WITH THIS PHONE!!

Please continue to report this to Apple and complain on forums and hopefully they will issue a fix. After all, antenna issues are not the biggest complaint to Apple support now, but it is all over the media/blogosphere, so it became a priority for Apple to fix.

yes, while in a call, I've covered it with my thumb and it IS working, but its just very finicky. If I move even slightly, the screen comes on. But I shouldn't have to completely block out the sensor for it to work, it should have a certain range where it senses something closer than say.. an inch or two and kills the screen.
 
Wow! Same thing here. I didn't know that's the term for this. I started a thread on this with no response, now I see why.
It's very annoying I know!!! Happened again today.
Have to be very careful my face doesn't touch the phone.
 
this happened to me just once, I was in the middle of a call and didn't even move my hand at all! the screen came on and my face pressed the speaker button.

Looks like I'll be taking my phone back soon then. In the 4 times I've been talking on the phone in the last 3 days it's happened n it's very annoying. I had it call someone else while I was on the phone talking to someone. All of a sudden I heard someone elses answering machine. I'm like WTF.
 
me too...and now i am waitng for a newly tested one supposedly apple knows all about it...they are calling it (a capture)...we will see...i never had any issues with the original ,3g or 3gs.....
 
Never had that problem yet. My first iphone 4 had a dead home button and no iOS, exchanged it the next day and no problems (barring the antenna issue, which isnt so bad with the bumper). Just exchange it till it works, seems like a bad lot(s) from the factory.
 
If Apple does not fix this issue in the next update I will be getting rid of the phone. People saying that they don't have this problem try holding the phone with your shoulder. I have a similar thread an am as outraged. If you like us are having this issue continue to fill the forums and make phone calls. Only hope for a fix.

When folks first started making mention of the signal strength issue, I immediately tried to duplicate that and was never able to do so. As a result, I thought I was fine.

However, my false sense of iP4 security was soon dashed. I started experiencing all of the situations folks have described such as muted calls, Facetime calls, calls magically switching to speaker.... It has been pretty embarrassing since I use this phone for business and it gets a little touchy when a private discussion suddenly is being heard by all those around me when my speakerphone jumps into action!

I've tried resetting and restoring but nothing seems to work. I want to believe this is something that can be fixed (before my 30 days) by an update. I've been using the iPhone since they were originally released and frankly don't want to switch to anything else, but may be forced to do so if this can't be resolved :-(
