Apple today released the first beta version of iOS 4.1 and the associated software development kit (SDK) to developers. There is no word yet on changes included in the updates.

Many users have been waiting for a promised iOS software update to address signal strength display issues on the iPhone 4, but it is likely that Apple is planning to push out a smaller update specifically addressing issue rather than waiting for iOS 4.1 and all of the associated developer testing before releasing it.

I sure hope they release iOS 4.0.1 soon, although I'm looking forward to this iOS 4.1 as well. How long after betas are released until the actual thing, usually?

Hopefully this will calm a lot of people.

Can't wait for some feedback! :D

I hope they put the user editable dictionary back in or the ability to play a video in a web page without being taken out of the page.

It's very interesting that the update is 4.1 and not 4.0.1.

I think I'm going to sit this one out. My iPhone 4 has enough issues. Adding beta software to it probably isn't a wise move.

I want to see the following fixed.

Proximity sensor fixed.

SMS/MMS over Wi-Fi while in Airplane mode.

Landscape orientation lock. When I'm watching a Youtube video and multi-task out to check out a message when I comeback the video locks into portrait mode.

I've also been experiencing some problems with Safari as well.

Do they even put out developer seeds for x.y.1 updates? I know they do for x.1 updates.

I don't think they do for x.x.1, but it's interesting that the first update for 4.x is x.1 instead of x.0.1, as it has been with the other OS revisions. At least as far as I recall.

Don't you need a dev account to use this beta? Might be worth warning people who have downloaded it if so.

Usually that is the case, but plenty of people were able to install the GM of iOS 4.0 without needing an account.
