3g with 3.1.3 and 5.6 carrier settings.. Is tethering available?

I searched but couldnt find a definitive answer. My dad has a 3g with 3.1.3 and 5.6 carrier settings. I'm not looking to jailbreak but willing to if I need to. All he wants is tethering. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Jailbreak and install pdanet.

You cant without jailbreaking it.
Install one of the tethering hacks that allows for native tethering.
Or mywi or pdanet would do. Mywi is alot simpler and offers wifi tethering also.

What did I tell you above?
You CANNOT use tethering on 3.1.3 without JB.
