realistic difference in speed Early 2008 octo2.8GHz vs Late 2010 octo2.4GHz??

Hey guys,

what is the approx. speed increase of the new 2.4GHz octo Mac Pro over the early 2.8GHz octo Mac Pro?
30%? more? Less?

I just would like to know whether or not I should keep my 2008 on ebay or not 🙂)

That's for the 2.26GHz octo but 2.4GHz isn't much faster. Not worth it IMO
 
The memory architecture in the 09/10 systems is dramatically improved over the 08's, however whether that will make any difference to you or not will be very dependent on your workload. If you do a lot of modeling calculations that are memory intensive, then you could benefit... otherwise, the improvements would be marginal.

you only show 2009 though. Is 2009 basically the same as 2010? ie, westmere has no big advantage over 2009 procs?

Westmere is based on Nehalem, it's just a codename for die shrink of Nehalem. The performance should be about the same

oh I see. Well, let me ask you this. If I can get the new 2010 8core 2.4GHz for about £400 do you think its worth it or is it better to stick with 2008?

E5520 and E5620 are both 80W chips. Both have lower TDP than '08 though

I wouldn't. 400£ is a lot money, it can be spent on something else (SSD, more RAM/HDs...)
