I recently received my imac g5, its a 17" 1.8 and the buzzing processor is briving me bananas. Not off to a good switch. Has anyone had a quiet imac and has anyone received a replacement midplane that has solved the problem?

Any advice is appreciated.

Dave.

Well as some here have read my thread about me stupidly not useing a power convertor on my brand new 20" iMac, you can guess what happend next. BANG! and blue lights, i nearly cryed i have been waiting for it for so long. I am lucky that the apple folks in the workshop are great people i know for some time so they fixed it in about 5 hours.

I have no problem with my iMac G5, th ebest thing is to call apple and see if they will replace it.

I got mine a couple of days ago and had some problems transferring files my old iMac to the new one. Apart from that I can't hear it unless it is really working. And even then it is just the sound of air moving at speed. I'm very happy with it, though I waited a while and got the computer from Frys. The shipping label on the box says it arrived Nov 7th, so it is one of the more recent ones off of the production line.

I've got the same model as you and it's running perfectly. I've yet to have a single issue with it, and it's very quiet. Sorry to hear about your experience but don't give up yet! Get it fixed, it really is a great computer.

At first oddly enough my 20 was buzzing but after awhile it became quieter and as I write this, inaudible, I can only hear the low hum of the fans

I have a 17" 1.8 as well, and it too buzzes.

So far, I have replaced the power supply AND midplane, and the problem still persists.

My iMac is currently at a repair center, for no reason as Apple only wanted them to clarify the sound (even after Apple heard it over the phone and in .mov files I sent them).

I have had the most difficult time dealing with Apple for the past two months and have been getting nothing but trouble from them in trying to get this fixed or replaced.

I'm at the point now where I have to firmly DEMAND a new machine.

I really do hope you have better luck than I, and that getting a quiet machine is much easier for you!

Good luck!

p.s. you can find my 4-page thread in the hardware section about my experience, that outlines everything I have been through so far.

From what I can see, those who preordered right out of the gate have the noise issue. However, our store didn't get any stock until well after the preorders were being filled. As such, every machine that we have sold has not had the problem. Methinks that those who jumped the gun got stuck with unsolved issues, whereas those who waited to get them from retailers got those with solved problems.

I bought mine from a retailer, and it had the problem too.

I don't think it is all pre-orders as I pre-ordered a 17in 1.8 with AE, 160GB HDD and 512MB RAM the day they were released and I have had no trouble at all. The thing is very quiet unless I am doing heavy stuff like iMovie and GarageBand. And like others have said, even when the fans are going full force, the noise is still not very loud.

I have a 17" SuperDrive iMac G5 that I bought from the Apple Store on 10/23 (IIRC, the shipping label says it was shipped on 10/18 from China). It has the noise issue and a replacement mid-plane assembly did not make any difference (although my guess is that I received a re-manufactured mid-plane assembly - the motherboard serial number was earlier than the one in my iMac).

According to the product specialist I am working with the engineers have no idea what is causing this. Supposedly I am on a list that will be called once there is a solution. At this point, I am envious of my grandfather's eMac.

EDIT: For clarification, I bought it from a brick-and-mortar Apple Store, not online.

my mom has the 1.8g5 17' g5 imac, is silent unless i try to boot it to tiger build 8A268,, then it sounds like it will blow up, doesn't do that anymore with 8A294 so i am a happy person. but yea, completely silent (for the most parT)

My wife has a 20" iMac G5. It worked fine for a week, then, while she was working on it, the screen went black. First they sent me an inverter for it, but replacing it didn't solve the problem. Then they sent me a whole new screen and bezel assembly, which did the trick. It took a little over a week to get it all sorted, but it's running fine again, with no noise. I hope we don't have any more problems with it; it's really a nice machine.

probably sounded like that cause Tiger doesn't have the proper speed control for the fans...

it sounds like a little model airplane flying around and it varies with CPU load so i know its the processor fan. Would it be worth it to call Apple and get a replacement are to wait a few weeks and see if they can work things out?

Is it too late to return it or exchange it? My mistake was letting Apple try to fix my iMac, which pushed me out of the 10-day return policy.

I would recommend calling and having them create a case number to note your concern, but don't bother with replacing the power supply or midplane assembly. It doesn't seem to fix the problem, although now being an expert in how the iMac G5 is assembled, I don't see what else could be making the noise.

I am supposedly on a list to be called once a fix is found, as are a number of other posters. I am sure one of us will post the outcome on MacRumors. At that point, I would have Apple fix the machine.

iMac Noise

I purchased my 17" 1.8 the day they arrived in the Apple store. I have no problems with it whatsoever. You cannot hear it unless it is under a heavy work load. If I set something under the iMac however you can then hear the air rushing around it. Once I remove it the sound goes away.
