Hello

Would appreciate help in killing WDSmartWareD.

WD My Book installed SmartWare on my iMac. I removed SmartWare, however WD web site says that they are aware of the problem and working on finding ways to remove SmartWare from hard disks. In the meantime, root launches and re-launches WDSmartWareD process, which grabs all CPU resources (and a fair chunk of memory I only have 1GB of ram)

How Can I Kill This Process for good WITHOUT RE-LAUNCHING. I love my mac so much but this WDSmartWareD is killing me :(
 
Here's what you need to do

Fire up the Terminal and run the following:

Code: 
sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.WesternDigital.WDSmartWareD.plist

Code: 
sudo rm /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.WesternDigital.WDSmartWareD.plist

Fix for WD

The WD folder can be found here delete it to stop the processes /Library/Application Support/WDSmartWare/Backup/Daemons/WDSmartWareD

Thank you, thank you! Your suggestion worked for me. Eliminated the WDSmartWare CPU-hogging software for good.:)
 
i am having the EXACT same problem as the OP, and followed these directions and found that file using finder. however, i put it in the trash and tried to empty the trash, but it says 'the operation can't be completed because WDSmartWareD' is in use. how do i get around that? it's the same issue the OP discussed; i have no WD stuff on my computer in any way, shape or form, but when i look at my activity monitor or iStat, WDSmartWareD is using almost 100%, sometimes up to 105%, of my computer

i did a secure empty trash to force it to empty. i'm going to try a reboot and see if it in fact fixed the problem. *fingers crossed

The most effective method for complete app removal is manual deletion:
