Okay, here's the situation: Got an Apple refurbished iBook from smalldog this summer, great machine. First tried to use the microphone a couple weeks ago, and it doesn't work properly. Under system preferences it shows up, but doesn't work at all when the screen is open to a normal angle. If the screen is being moved, the microphone will cut in and out, and if the screen is nearly closed it works fine. However if the screen if open much further than normal the microphone just registers very loud static...
An hour on the phone with Apple tech support did nothing - they suggested things like looking in system preferences to check that the microphone is selected. Ultimately they said to take it to an apple repair shop in town. ( currently we're in Dublin, Ireland.) The repair shop wasted lots of time before deciding that it was a hardware issue, so we had to wait for their "hardware specialist" who then apparently decided that it was a software issue, so that we would wait for their "software specialist" who concluded that nothing was wrong at all. So after demonstrating the problem again, they were confounded and decided that maybe it should go back to Apple, but that they couldn't do that...
Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this? Any input whatsoever would be hugely appreciated.

Did you mention to Apple that the problem is connected to the angle of the display? If you did , then you've run into a bunch of incompetents as it is so obviously a hardware problem.

The microphone resides in the top right of the display, it has a cable that runs down the side, across the bottom of the display, it then exits out of the left hinge and connects to the logic board at the front left of the the main body (next to the hard drive).

It sounds like the cable is damaged where it comes through the hinge. The cable/microphone will have to be replaced.
