Blu Ray playback on iMac

Is it possible to connect a blu ray player to my iMac using a minidisplay to hdmi adapter and a mini optical audio to optical toslink cable?

Yes, but you need an expensive converter box like this. It only provides 720p. For 1080p you need this

So I'd better off getting an external usb blu ray drive for around $150?

I don't think there's any playback software if you get a blu-ray drive for you mac, short of booting into Windows.

It's possible but not very straightforward
