Hey guys

I just have a question for people who have all these 3 products:

iPhone 4
Apple Bumper (the original one Apple gives out for free)
Apple Universal Dock for iPod and iPhone

Since most people probably will want to use this Apple Bumper on their iPhone4 to get good signal strength I am trying to figure out how I can make a good setup with a dock. So basically I am looking for the best way to have a dock that will fith the iPhone 4 with the bumber on it so it doesn't have to be taken on and off all the time.

I have learned that the iPhone 4 will not fit in the specific iPhone 4 dock and it will not fit either in the universal dock with the iPhone 4 adapter in it. Also people suggest the best way of using an iPhone 4 with the bumper in the universal dock is to put it in with no adapter at all. But then other people say that the fit is a bit too loose and it might damage the 30-pin connector in the phone since it will have no extra support in the dock.

So I was thinking that since the universal dock comes with 5 adapters maybe one of them would fit? Like the one for the regular iPod. So has anyone tested this? Maybe one of the adapters will work with no or maybe little costumization with a small knife or something like that. Also please make sure that iPhone can charge and is fully connected with the dock.

I live in Denmark and the iPhone is in short supply here since it has just launched - eventhough i put myself on a waiting list almost 2 months ago. So i can't test anything out myself.

Thanks in advance. :)

If no one is responding, I would take it that at least no one who is in your situation has read your post.

Bumping is against the rules....just an FYI.

I guess making the same post over and over again would be better then? In this forum a post gets thrown on the 2nd page within 8 hours and chances are that people who might have an answer to my question are not looking within those 8 hours.

I'll go search for an answer elsewhere in that case...

I just took my 3GS case apart and covered in gaffer tape
Looks kinda funny but works great with any case.

Hiya,

I'm currently doing exactly what you want to find out, without any of the adapters in the dock.

Let me try the others to see, back in a mo!

UPDATE

Well, i tried all of the adapters to see if one could fit perfectly, but alas, none do.

The closest fitting to the iPhone 4 + Bumper is the adapter 9 (iPod Classic 80/120GB), but there wouold need to be some modification to the very bottom, as the bumper just, and i mean just, prevents full contact with the 30 pin connector.

It looks and feels as if it is connected but after checking on the PC, iTunes didn't see it and it wasn't charging :(

Time for some cutting me thinks?

Someone needs to make a kit for moulding your own adapter to suit any case. Perhaps a liner that's shaped to fit in the dock with a pseudo dock connector. Cover the iPhone with cling film then pour in some sort of resin.

ANOTHER UPDATE

Well this is a bit strange.

I've just checked my universal dock upstairs in the bedroom and the adapter is completely different from the one downstairs!!

The newer universal docks have a very small thin slot for the dock connector to protrude through, but the older adapters from the earlier universal models have a whopping great big hole - which is perfect for the bumper.

So, bottom line is if you have an old universal dock (with the 3G adapter) - no adjustments necessary.

If you have the newer universal dock, you will need to use adapter 9 and cut out the bottom so the bumper will fit.

Hope this helps.

I'm know questioning if the dock adapter with the whole bottom missing is an Apple product. Sounds silly but i can't find any reference to these earlier versions.

Funny thing is it fits perfectly, but it hasn't got the adapter number like the 9-17 you get now.

Aah, could it be an adapter from the iPod universal dock?? For the original click wheel ipods??

Pictures to follow to get more clarification

NEW UPDATE

Well it turns out that this adapter i have is an iclarifi adapter, trouble is i really don't remember purchasing one!!

I did buy a 3rd party iPhone 3G dock from eBay ages ago, maybe it came with that!!

See attached pic - if you can get that one, you do not need to modify anything, plus it fits the universal dock as well.

FINAL UPDATE

Just remembered. I got it when i bought a case for my 3G - Switcheasy CapsuleNeo, NOT ICLARIFI. Comes as part of the box contents. See here:

Box Contents
# One CapsuleNeo unit
# 2 x TactileThin silicon membrane
# 2 anti-static screen guards
# One microfiber wipe
# One squeegee for your screen guard application
# One universal dock adapter
# One video dock stand
# One power jack connector protector
# One headphone jack protector

Finally, thought i was going mad!!

Thanks a lot mate. This was really what I was looking for.

I am looking forward to seeing some picture if you are stating to cut in plastic.

And I don't have any dock yet so I will be getting a new universal dock from Apple.

Edit: And ye I have no clue on how I would get an adapter like that. Are there any of the adapters the new dock comes with that can be easily modified?

No Worries.

I'm currently using a dremel (there are other types of handheld sanding/cutting/filing machines available!!) to enlarge the original hole on adapter 9.

I used a pen to draw around the inside of the adapter, then slowly and carefully used a tapered filing tool to cut/melt away the bottom part (depends on how fast the dremel goes!).

Dead easy to do, pics to follow.

Well here we go.....

Enlarged the hole big enough so iPhone 4 + Bumper fits snugly, but more importantly, syncs and charges :)

See attached pic, top is original number 9 adapter, bottom is modified version - still got to tidy up the edges but you get the idea.

I can't thank you enough. This was exactly what I was looking for.

This adapter 9 - can you see on the adapter which of them is number 9 or how will I know which one of the 5 included adapters will work with the modification?

Yes, the numbers are printed near the bottom of the dock adapters.
