Or is that something that RIM has on lockdown. i dont know much about how BBM works, hence the question.

So, any chance there will be a jailbroken app that will let me bbm with my blackberry friends?

Yeah BBM actually use RIM server, I doubt it it will be a hack for that.
 
Unfortunately no, but you can ask your Blackberry friend and yourself to use Whatsapp which is a 3rd party multi platform messaging. Not too shabby
 
Very unlikely as the BBM infrastructure is tightly controlled by RIM. What's App has native iPhone and Blackberry clients which is similar to BBM. It does require both parties to have the app installed.
