Issue with FPS on Counter Strike: Source, after i have allready upgraded my Mac

I have an I Mac 21.5" OS X which i bought for myself a few months ago. The main reason i bought a new computer, was so that i could play on Counter Strike: Source with my other friends.

On the day i purchased my I Mac, the people in shop shop added and extra 6 GB of RAM, so my computer now has 8GB of RAM altogether.

My issue is that whenever i go onto counter strike, i only get an average FPS of about 40, where i have actually found out macs are about to get an average of 150 fps. The reason i am more annoyed about this, is that i have also purchased a game called 'Killing Floor' where my average FPS is about 200 whenever i play. This leads me to believe that it's an issue with my game and not the computer.

I have attempted to update my drivers, but i failed horribly as i have no idea how to do that lol 😛.

My friends all own PC's, so they cant help me, the only explanation they seem to have is that the update ruined my fps :S.

Pleas help if you can, because ill try pretty much anything to play with my friends without lagging or getting delay! Thanks in advance 🙂!

Are you gaming in Windows or in OS X?

Currently (10.6.4 update) there's a major problem with the graphics drivers in OS X. This is causing slowdowns like you describe.

While waiting for Apple to release a new driver package/opengl fix you could try to play the game in Windows (bootcamp).

EDIT: What graphics card do you have? Is it the 9400M or the HD4670?
 
i know the mid 2010 imacs has the graphics driver update already. When 10.6.5 comes out, will it help the graphical performance of mid 2010 imacs even more?

If 10.6.5 contains the same drivers-only package that's in there already, then no. But if 10.6.5 contains more optimizations than drivers, for example
the OpenGL implementation, then yes.

Or do what I did and use Pacifist to pull the new drivers out of the mid-2010 iMac software update and install them in your mac.

Framerates before I did this (iMac 27" Corei7 2.8 ghz model):

Significant improvement. I don't know when this graphics update will be available but it's being tested by developers now.

So-far I've heard of no downside to installing the pre-release but like I said in another thread you could brick your computer if you don't know what you're doing.

At lower resolutions, the improvements are even higher. The tests done here were at the highest possible res for the big 27" screen.

The 1920 x 1080 test is even more impressive:

Yes i am gaming on OS X, so if its the drivers that is the problem, will i just have to wait until theyve made an update to fix the problem?

I can see this is a big improvement, but is there any use in explaining to me how you did it? As a said, i have only had my Mac a few months and still have pretty much no idea how to do what people say, unless its explained really carefully and in detail.

1. As I've stated before.
2. Download the Mid-2010 iMac Graphics Update.
3. Download Pacifist.
4. Launch Pacifist and open the disc image of the iMac Graphics update.
5. Search in System/Library/Extensions for All ATI Graphics items.
6. Highlight them and select "install" in the masthead of Pacifist.
7. Reboot. You're done.

If you brick your machine, it's not my fault.

Also, if you like you can wait for Apple to push this out officially via software update.
