Advice about guarantees / warranties etc

I was hoping to find out if someone knows the answer to this question: If I buy a Mac which no longer has a guarantee / warranty can I re-new it through any other outlet / service provider (ie, can I pay to get it serviced if it goes wrong etc)?

Can you be more specific?

Macs come with a one-year warranty. During that one year warranty, you can purchase Applecare, which extends the warranty to three years from date of original purchase.

I haven't bought Applecare yet, so I have no idea if there's requirements you need to meet before purchasing it (ie, if you must have your original receipt, if you must have the machine registered in your name, etc.). I'm sure someone else knows about this aspect, though?

Specifically I was thinking of buying a mac (second hand) from someone who had it and now the one-year warranty has expired and he has no Apple care. I would be buying it for a good price but without a guar / warr and therefore I was wandering if it is possible to buy something later from an independent guarantor / repair specialist.

I think that across a lot of kinds of products, these things are not very often worth it, unless you specifically think you're going to subject your computer to enough risk that *you're* likely to break it.... 🙁 My impression is that you'll end up paying more into such a program than you'll ever get out, in the vast majority of cases. That's how companies that market warranties stay in business. It's different from the OEM, like Apple -- they can give you a warranty that's a "loss leader" -- not directly profitable, but valuable to the company because they encourage sales. 3rd party warranty companies have no reason to do that.

Thanks to wdlove. Quick question: Can I purchase Procare and then use its cover after I have purchased a second hand computer without a current guarantee. I looked at site but couldn't work it out. Sam
