24" iMac won't turn on after power failure overnight

Hey all,

Just before I start, my AppleCare ran out earlier this year in February, so I'd rather not have to take it in the Apple if I can avoid it.

So, I left my iMac on overnight last night to finish downloading some stuff.
I woke up and all our clocks are flashing, so we must've had a blackout.
Anyway, I went to check the progress of my downloads, and the iMac was off.
I pushed the power button and nothing happened. No fan noise, HDD noise, nothing. I've been trying for almost two hours now and nothing is working.

I've already tried resetting the SMC and checking the RAM modules, which seem to be fine. I can't try anything else (ie resetting PRAM) because it won't turn on to boot. Nothing happens.

Can anyone offer any advice?

I am new to Macs, but my PC experience is if there is nothing at all when you hit the button, no sound, fans, etc. it is most likely a blown power supply.

I am assuming you checked your breaker and any power strip breaker? Did you have it on a surge protector or (better yet) a UPS?
 
Sounds like you might have suffered more than a garden variety power outage. A power surge might have cooked your power supply.

Do you use a good surge protector? Cheap ones offer little, if any, protection.
I'm sorry for your misfortune, but your homeowner's insurance might be able to help.
 
If you didn't have a surge protector, then chances are you killed the power supply and you need it replaced by Apple and fork over some cash.

If you did have a surge protector, there's a slim chance your power supply was killed but assuming you have a good protector (e.g. Belkin), they'll cover the cost of damage/repairs so get into contact with them - since they always offer a lifetime damage insurance thing.

Did have surge protection. Turns out that the iMac itself tripped the upstairs power circuit. So I guess the power supply is dead and I'm off to the genius bar to have it repaired.

Try a hard reset

This has happened to me twice in the past week, seeing as we have had some pretty nasty storms. The second time, I even shut down our Mac when I heard the storm starting, but we still had the same problem the next morning after a power outage.

The solution ? I unplugged the Mac from behind the screen, not the outlet end. I left it unplugged for about 30 minutes. After I plugged it back in, it started like a Ferrari. Happened twice and worked twice.

did you try a new outlet? If not its your power cord. Try and order a new one off amazon, it that doesn't work. Your going to have to take it to a professional. It doesn't have to be apple. Look on Yellow pages or something like that for computer experts
