New 12-Core Mac Pros Now Available for Order

As announced in July, Apple has started accepting orders for the new 12-core Mac Pros. The Mac Pro configurations now come in 3 different base configurations:

$2499 - (Quad Core) One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Nehalem Processor
$3499 - (8-Core) Two 2.4GHz Quad Core Westmere Processors
$4999 - (12-Core) Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Westmere Processors

Each configuration can be further customized with faster processors, SSD drive options and upgraded ATI Radeon graphics cards. All the changes were previously detailed in the press release of the announcement:
At the heart of the new Mac Pro’s performance are next generation quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors running at speeds up to 3.33 GHz. These multi-core processors use a single die design so each core can share up to 12MB L3 cache to improve efficiency while increasing processing speed. These systems feature an integrated memory controller for faster memory bandwidth and reduced memory latency; Turbo Boost to dynamically boost processor speeds up to 3.6 GHz; and Hyper-Threading to create up to 24 virtual cores. The Mac Pro now comes with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor with 1GB of memory and customers can configure-to-order the even faster ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of memory.

I can only afford the one up to the 12 core 2.66GHz model but then afterwards I'll be TOTALLY BROKE.

I'm going to see if I can get the 2.66GHz or 3.33GHz older Nehalem models at the local apple store at a big discount.

Nehalem is Nehalem.

Why did they give the 27" ACD a buy now page if it just takes you to the 24" ACD?

Apple does discounts like that? How much are they usually?
Haha right now....I can't even afford the base model.

Thats a good tactic because most buyers will think that its a preorder but then it takes them to the 24" ACD where they might decide on getting the smaller version.

I remember when the Nehalem models were released, the 2.8GHz 8 core model went from $2499 to $1799 the very next day.

So I'm hoping the 2.66GHz Nehalem base model is $1799 later today at the store. I think if you opened up a business account and made a business purchase it was $1799 but without it, it was $1999 I believe ($500) off.

I dont see how what is basically a bait and switch is a good tactic. And for some reason they aren't doing on the Canadian apple store. Does Apple think Americans are suckers?

I still cannot fathom how they can charge that much for the base model. For the 12-core, I have no real comparison, so it's difficult to say how overpriced it is.

Expensive and ackward

This is Expensive and awkward - right now Im so happy with my 2009 Mac Pro - we should have got another during the weekend.

Paid £2900 for a eight core 2.26 with 16GB ram added a 128GB SSD later.

Why should I buy a 512GB SSD would be stupid from my point.

This is really serious! I know the hardware side is upped but for 2800 I get 2.4 and 6GB Ram. Upgrading to 16GB adds £600.

Apple you are making me considering other options!

The difference in computational performance is negligible when you are comparing one core to another at the same clock speed. At similar prices between the two lines there are 2 more cores on the higher end processors (those in the $900+ region) and the lower end quad cores have more L3 cache because they are 6-core processors with 2 cores disabled, and come with a slightly faster clock speed (mostly just one more multiplier higher).
