Last week, we reported that, despite strong results for early adopters of Apple's iAd mobile advertising platform, roll-out of the ads has been slow due to Apple's tight control over the entire ad development process. At the time we noted that more high-profile ads were scheduled to be coming in the near future.

Silicon Alley Insider provides a walkthrough of two new iAds that have just gone live, featuring Apple's U.S. iPhone partner AT&T and "The Switch", a new movie with Jason Bateman and Jennifer Anniston that debuted this past weekend.

The AT&T ad focuses on the carrier's new $15-per-month Data Plus plan, carrying the tag line "Now your entire family can afford the mobile internet." The various ad panels outline the carrier's Data Plus ($15/200 MB) and Data Pro ($25/2 GB) plans and offer estimates and tools to help users decide which plans would be right for them given their mobile activities. The company also pushes its Wi-Fi hotspots, available to its cellular data customers free of charge.

The iAd for "The Switch" offers a variety of features, including a tool for finding nearby theaters showing the film, trailers and commercials, a photo gallery, character bios, and a humorous "quiz" to help users decide whether they are ready to be parents. The ad also features a mini-game called "Build a Baby", which lets users assemble various combinations of hair, eyes, and mouths to create unique "baby" faces. The resulting images can be saved to the users' Camera Roll photo folders.

The best part of having an iAd right now is that all the Apple blogs will post videos and photos of your ad which you don't have to pay for! :D

The thick of it
The AT&T ad focuses on the carrier's new $15-per-month Data Plus plan, carrying the tag line "Now your entire family can afford the mobile internet."

Ummm ... if you're seeing that ad on your iPhone, it seems to be kind of pointless. I could maybe see a use for it if someone was using a Touch or a (non-3G) iPad. I just don't understand why they're advertising their data plan to people who most likely are using their data plan.

AT&T wants to you drop your unlimited plan and get their new 2GB/month plan ;). Don't worry, it's the "Pro" plan ;)

Ask Apple
Its quite telling when the addition of two commercials to iAd warrants front page news on Mac Rumors. Personally, I don't think many people are using this, and its a pending failure for Apple.

No, its the "Poge" plan

wtf does the iad do that benefits us? We should get free crap and I assuming this will take the Ads out of apps so we can truly see the app.

Ha, I don't think this is really newsworthy.

I do like iAds though. I've tapped quite a few of them. They are much more entertaining and involved than other "loud", fast and confusing ads like on TV or banner ads. I dig em.

Why though, is AT&T advertising in them. Seems stupid. If we are seeing them, we already have an iDevice, and mostly likely have an iPhone...with a data plan because you forced us to get one.

Seems like a lot of effort for a film that bombed and is going to completely disappear from theaters in about a week.

Edit: This is certainly a case where the iAd needed to start appearing at least a month ago. Wonder who caused the delay? What a waste.

The system went on-line August 4th, 2010. Human decisions are removed from strategic take-overs. AppleNet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th.

Actually, it really was not that much effort. I mean has anyone on here actually tried to build a webpage in html5??

The lack of iAds speaks more to developers reluctance to abandon the Flash platform than the demise of the iAd platform. After a few more of these come out, the developer's bosses will start breathing down their necks and force them to learn; at which time they will be pleasantly surprised to find how easy it actually is.

Is anyone interested in new iAds? Anyone?

Anything that makes the platform more lucrative for developers without deteriorating it (iAds is an improvement over AdMob for numerous reasons, but chief among them, as the user, is not being dragged out of the app) has the added benefit of helping us out in the end. More apps. More variety, more money into development, etc.

No, but it makes the editor look as though he is earning his keep.

I'm going to stop visiting this website, seriously.
Normally, I would tell you to go fly a kite, but that would not be helpful. Instead, I will agree with you that these frivolous news stories dilute and harm the MacRumors brand.

iAds are great for everyone and this DOES deserve to be front page news! Users get a much better ad experience while developers get more money which means better FREE apps for the end user!

You have a fantastic point on the AT&T ad, but it may be worthwhile in the near future if a competitor in the U.S got the iPhone! /conspiracy :p

Switchers be damned!

You know what would be truly revolutionary? No ads, ever.

And the devs are supported how?

You can opt for a paid version most of the time if it bothers you.

Two really great examples of what can be done with iAds. If these two don't attract new advertisers... I don't know what will.

p.s. I wonder how long it took Apple to finish them.

That 'build a baby' thing looks horrific.

It's a metaphor for that movie. :p

As much as I love Jennifer Aniston and think Jason Bateman is friggin' funny, I really don't want to see a movie like that.

-----------

The AT&T iAd is directed at iPod touch (over 32 million sold as of the end of 2009) and iPad users (3 million sold in 80 days). People that don't have an iPhone or iPad data plan. I think it's a good idea by them to try to bring in new customers that believe a data plan is too expensive for them. If anything, it puts the idea in people's minds.
