I have a 10.1.4 server running which is accessed by the Macs and pc's in our department. However Macs running OS 8.6 cannot connect, even though the server shows up in the chooser. They fail to connect after the username and password is entered giving the error "bad password". Oddly though I can connect to the server using these macs but I think this is because I'm the main user/administrator of the server.
Anyone have any idea's whats wrong and how to fix it?

    Any help appreciated.

Do Mac OS 9 clients connect properly?
Could be that OS 8.6 has a dated AppleShare client.... not sure.
I have a couple of "old" 10.1.5 Servers at work, and all the Mac OS 9.1 (and 9.2.2) clients connect perfectly.
BTW, "Authentication Manager" is on, as I also have PC (Windows) clients.

Edit: Also when the Servers were running 10.1.4 there were no problems with the OS 9 clients.

MacsRgr8...yes the OS 9 clients connect without any problem at all, the only ones giving me grief are the 8.6 machines, which I cant upgrade to OS9 for technical reasons. But would happen to be key to our facility and communication with the server is vital.

We will be upgrading to 10.2 server shortley, the 10.1 server recently died and required a clean install, since then this issue has arrisen, oddly the 8.6 machines connected fine before this. Which makes it all the more difficult to understand.

I suspect the version of appleshare may be the culprit as I've seen this mentioned elsewhere, I've downloaded v3.8.6 and 3.8.8 in the hope one of these will fix this issue. I'll also dump the appleshare preferences from the affected machines.

I'll check the server config also, but I dont think it will be this as the OS 9 clients are fine.

    Thanks for the reply.

Sepulchre: sounds like a tough problem...

The only problems I had with "classic" clients were:
    - The TCP/IP weren't configured properly, so the clients "saw" the Sever in the chooser, but could not connect to it, as the AFP connection runs over IP, and not AppleTalk anymore.
    - Keyboards.... Sometime clients change their keyboards settings (NL, UK, US) without knowing what the consequences are..... So, they can get the "wrong password" error.

Can't think of anything else, I'm afraid.
    I wish you good luck!

    Sorted it!

I dumped the appleshare preferences, but they were still unable to connect, however I've updated appleshare to v3.8.6 this morning and the clients now connect without any problems.

It would seem the v 3.8.3 that they were running was causing the problems.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.
