Ok, I don't want to start a war here, I'm just wondering about people's opinions.

Which do you prefer, 10.1.x or 10.2.x ? Which version of OS X suits you best?

I'm interested in hearing what people have to say.

(I hope this is the correct forum to post this under.)

Well, obviously 10.2.x for many reasons.... Speed is the most important one.

I wonder if anyone prefers 10.1.x. That'll be interesting.

10.3.x would probably suite me more :)

    Re: 10.1.x or 10.2.x

That is the most weird question I have ever seen posted! Of course 10.2.*!

    ...ok, next question...

    Which do you prefer:

    a) Ford Fiesta
    b) Aston Martin DB7
    edit: just for Kwyjibo ;)
    c) Ferrari 360

    hmmmm....I wonder

The reason I asked was because I've met a people who dislike Jaguar.

10.1.x was far less system-intensive than Jaguar. 10.2.x also effectively shut out any machine with less than 16megs of VRAM; in my case, my 500Mhz iBook that I had bought only a year earlier.

Jaguar tends to batter my iBook pretty good, whereas 10.1.x ran quite smooth. But, Jaguar has many small improvements that make it much easier to use. Also, the graphics on Jaguar are much better & sharper.

    Herein lies my indecision.

And I'm all set with English sports cars, I can think of other things I'd rather waste money on. So yeah, 'next question.'

i think were just talking cars in general; its not liek the ford fiesta originated in england altough it sold well like many sub compact cars do in Europe. and my future ferrari is of course italian. I can imagine what you mean about the performace decrease in jaguar but apple is constantly trying to get you to upgrade....look at the ipods for the new features you have to get a new one. maybe they will replace the Think Different slogan they had with a "Buy New" Or Upgrade or Die" slogan to represent this seeming new theme. I'm seriously beginning to doubt the lifespan of my iBook for some reason because of recent actions.

That is exactly what I'm afraid of. It reminds me of the switch from 68k to PPC. I can only imagine what a switch to 64bit processors would be like.

When I bought my iBook, it had 9.1 & 10.0.3 in it. At that time OS X was like BeOS in now (empty and useless) so I stuck with 9. When 10.1 came out it was finally usable. (Althought I didn't buy 10.1 until it was already out for like a year.) Then Jaguar came out requiring at least 16megs VRAM. That screwed my iBook-- and it wasn't even 2 years old! I mean, it works but it can REALLY slow down. And now the news is that 10.3 is coming out this year. I can't wait- maybe my TiBook will be kicked out of the loop too.

Apple is updating their line faster and faster now, so do I buy early at full price? Wait 6 months and get it a little cheaper? Or wait almost a year, but it cheap, then get screwed when the next model comes out 2 weeks later and the previous model's price drops $300? (the iBook comes to mind.)

People said "well, at least Jaguar is only $130! That's cheaper than XP!!" Well sure, if you look at it as a one-time purchase. But think about Win2k, it's still a very useable OS. Hell, even Win98 is still supported. What happened to OS 8.6? See ya.
Win2K goes for maybe $300? How about OS9 + 10.1 + 10.2 ? Now the prices start to even out.

I fully support Apple and OS X, and I'm just as eager to see the new processors and 10.3, but this pushing things ahead is starting to remind me of M$s forced upgrades. Keynote, Safari, iSync & iCal all won't work on anything but Jaguar. I wonder if the faithful old G3s will be able to run Panther.

Is it time to toss the iBook or am I just paranoid?

probably a combination of the both. The iBook 500 does seem slow compared to any of the new iBooks. I would wait to see what they do with the powerbook line in the next revision. I mean a ghz 12in pbook would be great to see imo but it could go even higher , who knows.

You have GOT to be kidding me. I had an iBook 500 bought around the same time you did and Jaguar was like a breath of fresh air to it. While 10.1 had okay speed, Jaguar made the iBook worlds more usable in OS X, even though the machine did not support Quartz Extreme.

    5300cs,
I have the same iBook (500mhz) as you, and 10.2 is way much better on my iBook than 10.1 or OS 9 was. I don't know why you think Jaguar won't run on your 500mhz iBook, because it will and I think you'll be pleasently surprised in the speed. I thought Jaguar would bog down my system, but it has actually done quite the opposite. My little iBook has performed much better than I ever thought it would.

I can't wait to see how well Panther performs on my iBook. I'm sure it'll just make the OS X experience even better!

    OK, I guess I AM paranoid.

Kwyjibo >> I agree, a 1Ghz 12" would be really cool. I was hoping it would be that fast from initial release.

ibookin'@mwny & RBMaraman >> I'm using Jaguar on it now, and while there are things that are faster, things like lag when scrolling, moving windows + other things almost give me motion sickness. That's my biggest complaint.
The iBook is the best notebook I've ever used/owned, and I hope it'll survive when Panther comes out.

Again with the harshness. And please stop with the rolling of eyes! Every post I look at (with you in it) you seem to find some reason to use it!

    And I prefer 10.2.* because my computer is a G3 500 MGHZ.

And just so I beat edesignuk to it:

    G3 500 MGHZ
