pm__ _Post subject: WD to announce 10K SATA drive Feb 11th
Not sure how much to trust the source, guess we'll know in 6 days.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/story.html?id=1044471776 and www.insanelygreatmac.com are reporting that WD will announce 10000 rpm ide drives with the full 24/7 5year warranty as scsi drives. just for a note 10000 rpm scsi drives do 70+ transfer rates and sub 5 ms seek and almost double speed when put in a raid.
Will you get one and why?
I am thinkning of getting one and adding a scsi to ide bridge for a raid with my scsi 29160 cars and segate 10000 rpm cheetah and putting the os on one partition and apps on another and using my wd800JB for everything else provided they have a sub $200 dollar model.

I'll be honest, I know very little about running an external harddrive via firewire. Are the transfer rates high enough to see a difference between 7200 and 10000? Or does it bottle neck at the 400mb/s?
I don't see much trouble running 24-bit, 44.1, on my 7200 cheetah now... but we'll see. It does sound appealing.

    And my new Maxtor:

    Disk Test 115.86
    Sequential 111.81
    Uncached Write 105.69 46.11 MB/sec [4K blocks]
    Uncached Write 107.40 43.69 MB/sec [256K blocks]
    Uncached Read 138.05 21.74 MB/sec [4K blocks]
    Uncached Read 102.46 44.20 MB/sec [256K blocks]
    Random 120.22
    Uncached Write 134.22 2.03 MB/sec [4K blocks]
    Uncached Write 149.99 34.41 MB/sec [256K blocks]
    Uncached Read 98.80 0.64 MB/sec [4K blocks]
    Uncached Read 110.69 21.69 MB/sec [256K blocks]

If I can get a faster drive I will.

What program did you use to get those numbers?

Also, what are the drive models that were tested? A little more info would be great.

    benchmarks seem high

What bench utilty are you using< i find www.storagereview and www.barefeats.com to have the best test the fastest 15k only does 76 max, 10k 72 max and 7200 ide 56 max wdJB so to see a 138MB second is unusual unless it is reading the cache in the drive.
barefeat did a test using firewire 800 and found it as fast as internal ide on some benchmarks so i might get a firewirecase with fan. either way you should be at least 25% faster transfer rates and under 5ms seek raid. if the price is good this may be my next boot/app drive
