The new 17" Powerbook comes with 512 Megs of RAM. Is that enough for general use? Laptop will be used for Web browsing, Microsoft Office (light use), iLife including iPhoto and iMovie and iDVD for editing short home movies. I know that 'more is better' but how much more do I really need to budget to add - if any - to get good performance?

I'm not sure about iMovie. I know video work requires more RAM to be smooth. For most general uses 512-768 MB is sufficient. If you do hardcore video and imaging, then you should max out your RAM. You will most likely notice a performance boost in everyday operations if you go up to 1GB RAM. Higher than that depends on your memory-hungry programs.

I would suggest using it for a little while and seeing how you feel with performance. If it is choppy, I would actually put in a 1GB stick giving you 1.25 GB.
