The Academy Awards (Oscars) telecast will be this Sunday, March 5, at 8pm Eastern and 5pm Pacific on ABC. The host is Jon Stewart. As always, valuable MacRumors bragging rights are up for grabs based on who makes the best prediction of the winners.

Some people prefer other games to Oscar-guessing, preferring to avoid all the silliness over celebrity gossip, backroom dealing, who's wearing what, etc., but for those of us who are interested in the game, here is this year's contest.

Previous MacRumors Predict the Oscars contests:
2004: winners VincentVega and Pittsax
2003: winners wdlove and Doctor Q
2002: Doctor Q
There are 54 nominated movies this year (by coincidence, the same number as last year), with a total of 109 nominations over the 24 Oscar categories. They have not yet added a snowboarding category.

Here's how to vote:
  • Copy the ballot from this post.
  • Post to this thread and paste in your ballot.
  • Delete all but one line in each category, leaving 1 choice per category (your vote).
  • Click SUBMIT REPLY.
I will tally the votes on Monday, March 6 and post the results.

You are welcome to post other discussion about the Oscars too, here or in the previous discussion thread. However, please make it clear which movies you think will win, even if you also comment on which movies should win, so I can tell which you voted for in the contest.

See also the Bafta Award Winners thread.

Good luck!

I'm personally rooting for Memoirs of a Geisha in all its nominated categories: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.

And Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit was better than all the Best Picture nominees.

2004 - 1 nomination - Best Original Score: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

2005 - 2 nominations - Best Original Score: Memoirs of a Geisha and Munich

Amazing facts:

He averages 1.1 nominations per year over the last 39 years.

Since 1967, the only time he wasn't nominated two years in a row was 1985 and 1986.

In 1995 the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences expanded the Original Score category into two categories, Dramatic Score vs. Musical or Comedy Score, and he got nominated in both, plus Best Song too.

Four of his five wins were in odd-numbered years.

He has never won for Best Song.

This year is the 10th time he's been nominated twice in the Best Score category in the same year.
