Looking to pickup one tomorrow from the Apple Store. However the only feature that I cannot get at the store is the VRAM upgrade of 256mb. I will upgrade to 2gb of ram in the future and add a wireless keyboard and mouse. But I know I cannot upgrade the video memory myself so my question is would I be better off ordering the system BTO to get the 256mb VRAM or will it not make that much of a difference?

I see no difference. Buy from the store, its easier that way.

I'd personally go for the extra 256MB. It will help with games like Quake 4.

I know soon the stores will probably carry a special built machine that features the 256MB of VRAM included.

I don't think the extra ram will do much for quake...Quake isn't that demanding, the X1600 card substantially outdates Quake's needs and requirments.

Especially since we're talking about intel....

i'm not sure about that... you'd have to look up some benchmarks or something. but if you really need it, just buy from the store. but i always do recommend that people buy as high a spec machine as they can...

I only got it because of three reasons

1)I will be running 2 monitors (the built in 20inch and 24 inch dell) and the vram is split in half.
    2)Its cheap to do
3)I like to have the best :( :)

It wont make 'that much' difference

Sometimes stores have multiple configurations in stock, so you might find the 256 version at the store.

Definitely NOT - unless you need to use FCP and Creative Stuite NOW. If you can wait a bit for the pro apps, go with the Intel. You don't want an inferior machine for a mere $300 off the price. If you could GET the computer for $300, I'd say go for it! :D

In terms of the vram - if you're going to be doing video editing (like me) or plan to play video games, the ram upgrade makes the machine much more of a "pro" mac.

If you plan to keep the computer for a number of years I would order the BTO model with the extra vram. In a couple of years it could make a big difference in the performance of your computer and extend it's usable life. Besides you can't go back and add it in later.
