*I'm not a financial person by any means, so I have done no research if this is even fiscally possible.

After seeing the keynote, and listening to some podcasts. It seems many internet based companies have been merging of late. On TWIT, they discussed some possible mergers this year that could happen. The first was Google eating up AOL, and Microsoft following suit by swallowing Yahoo.

Personally, I think it makes sense that Apple pick up Yahoo, a company now on the decline due to better offerings from Google and slow evolution of some of their flagship "products". Lets face it, Apple will need a solid "content provider" for all the upcoming product lines, and who better than the company that practically transformed the way we use the internet. Just think about it. Apple would add a TON of services (Flickr, Mail, MyYahoo, Geocities, Fantasy Sports, Del.icio.us, etc) to their repository and can try to reclaim some of those lost users. To me it just makes sense, both sides would win and this "partnership" with Yahoo IMAP with every iPhone leads me to believe that Yahoo is really positioning itself to be acquired by Apple, and Apple is in a "try before you buy" mode.

You don't really think Apple Computer, Inc became Apple, Inc for sake of the iPod and iPhone...do you? I know I don't.

It definitely would be a MEGA merger. I'd expect Apple to keep the name, with a Yahoo brand of sorts.

AAPL - Market Cap (in millions): 82,627.79
YHOO - Market Cap (in millions): 39,759.17

Market Cap is the value of all outstanding shares of a company. So in theory, AAPL could buy or merge with YHOO, but I don't think it is likely.

Makes no sense to me. Apple is a hardware company that happens to make exceptional software. They have had little trouble adding content to iTunes albeit, movie companies have been slow. More will jump on the bandwagon.

i personally dont see it happening. i see them working together on joint ventures and such, but not buying out each other or merging...

hopefully your theory proves us wrong though? that would be quite a boost for AAPL stock!!

    um, no. a few reasons...

    1. Google's CEO is on Apple's Board, no? re: conflict
    2. Yahoo already has too many ties to different companies. SBC/AT&T for one, and yes while they do own Cingular/AT&T, it would make more sense for them to buy it than Apple.
    3. Yahoo has nothing that would help Apple in any way.

I don't think so, simply because I can't see 'what's in it' for either party.

The Google/AOL and Microsoft/Yahoo mergers/acquisitions mentioned seem far more plausible.

But then I'm not a tech expert/economist, so what do I know? :D

I just do not see aol buying up google. Google is to powerful right now and growing. No reason to sell.

As for apple buying up yahoo I do not see that happening. I can see it going to Microsoft though. They are both trying to knock google off as king and their IM programs are also linked now. YIM can talk with people on MSN messager and the other way around.

Honestly, I'm surprised Apple worked with Yahoo on the iPhone. When I here Yahoo I run away. I think Apple wouldn't want to be too closely associated with the has-been search engine that is Yahoo. Apple wants to be the company you look to for innovation, not the owner of a company that was mocked on "I Love the 90s".

The only good thing that could come from the merger would be .mac possibly being free again.

And then we'd all be forced to use Yahoo! in Safari rather than Google. (Although it seems Leopard will give us the choice anyway...)

Don't see it happening. But then stranger things have happened.
