3 Button Mouse

I remeber some years ago, in the PC world, there were 3 button mice like this one

How come they never caught on and faded away?

3 button mice has been in use in the UNIX world for ages. I guess it never caught on in the Windows world, since Windows didn't really use the third button for anything. When the scroll wheel arrived it added new functionality that wasn't possible with just a button, so that can explain why it caught on instead of the 3 button mice.

Right, I remember on the SGI boxes you would use the middle button to rotate 3D objects.

I kinda remember those, but I've only become a geek within the past year. Someone please inform me on the functionality of the 3rd button?
