the connector itself works fine. it's whether the iPod would physically fit in (and be supported by) different "generation" docks.

iPod (3G and 4G), iPod mini and iPod photo all have the same connector at the bottom.

I know the 40GB 4G iPod won't fit in the dock for a 20GB 3G iPod. They have to be close in size (the dock opening and the bottom of the iPod) so it can stand up without putting all that pressure on the connector.

Connector is the same. But the two generations changed thicknesses. So, you might damage/break your 3G dock by jamming a 4G iPod into it.

You're fine if it's a 15/20 GB 3G dock and and a 20 GB iPod 4G. However, if the sizes are different (15 GB and 20 GB together, and 40 GB are the other group), you'll have a problem. The thickness only changed by a millimeter, so you're fine in that way.

I use the dock from my old 30GB 3rd-gen iPod with my 60GB iPod Photo all the time just fine. What seem's to be the problem, dogday?

According to Mactracker (which needs to be updated), the 30GB iPod was/is 0.73" (18.5mm) deep. Apple says the iPod photo is 0.75" deep. That's probably within the tolerances designed into the dock, which is why you have no problem using your new iPod in it.

Hey guys. I was just about to buy a 4G, when I read on amazon (and then later Apple) that I would need the 4G dock, I already have the 3G so I dont want to waste more money buying another.

I had the 20GB 3G iPod, I will be getting the 4G 20GB iPod. So will the 4G fit in the 3G dock?

I've put a 4G 20GB in the dock for my 3G 30GB. It worked just fine. It was a little loose, but I wasn't worried about breaking anything.

the 20GB 4G is exactly (or nearly) the same depth as the 3G, so it should work just fine.

my 3G dock for my 3G 40gb iPod works fine with the 20, or 40 gb 4G iPods.

a friend's 3G 20gb dock works fine with the 20gb 4G iPod too...
