Relating to my original thread about which mac system to go for....

What is support like for the Mac with ATi products? I think ive decided that if i go for a Mac, im going to go for the PowerMac G5 system. The option of graphics card comes down to the 6800 GT DDL or the Radeon X850 XT... (both 256mb) or a 9600 which obviously isnt going to cut it.

In PC terms im sure the X850 would beat the 6800 GT... but on the Mac im not sure .

Im just really interested in which company shows more support, optimization and driver releases of the two.

    Thanks.

nVidia does not supply drivers for the Mac. Apple makes them themselves, and they obviously have different priorities. ATI makes drivers for the Mac. So the drivers for the Radeon cards will be better for gamers on the Mac than those for nVidia cards are.

If you're not a gamer, and use the cards for other tasks (video, 3D graphics, etc), then you'll have to do some research and look at benchmarks, because the 6800 GT will be better for some tasks, while the X850 XT will be better in others.

Agreed. Awesome Video Card! Saving up for one of these puppies to power my 20" ACD when I finally buy one.

Can you actually get them on there own? In Australia I can only see 6800 DDLs and GTs available for purchase from Apple.

No, not yet. You can only order the X850XT on Apple's website when purchasing new. But they will eventually come out seperate and then I may just have to buy one (probably from newegg.com).

I was about to say "yeah, if money is no object", but I read that Apple actually priced them both the same.

    The X850 XT, no question!

The only reason to get the 6800 would be to drive 2x 30" monitors. The Ultra has mysteriously disappeared, don't know what it will be replaced with and when. But the X850 is good right now.

I would say the Geforce 7800 GTX (better than either of those cards), but those lazy bums at NVidia haven't made a Mac version

And they never will. For that matter, they'll never make a PC version either. Why would ATI make a Nvidia card?

Hmm, isnt it nVidia who makes GeForce 7800 GTX? ;)

I have a 6800GT in my Dual 2.5Ghz G5 and am quite please with it. I actually have my GT overclocked to Ultra spec and have no problems at all. Another very important thing to point out besides the GT having Dual dual-link DVI is that both ports are DVI. That is very important because the X850 XT uses one Dual link DVI and one ADC. ADC is useless unless you have an old ADC display if not you will have to buy the $29 ADC to DVI connector to use two DVI displays which is what I have in my setup. The GT is still faster in Doom III than the X850 XT and can beat the X850 XT in Quake III and certain botmatch maps in UTK2003/04. However in most other games the X850 XT is slightly faster with the exception of Halo in which the X850 trounces the GT.

I would opt for the X850XT though if I were buying a Power Mac now as the GT/Ultra and X800 XT were my only options when I bought my Dual 2.5 G5. At that time the X800 XT was not available as a BTO and with my developers discount the upgrade to 6800GT was only $280 so it was well worth it.

ATI has their ATI Displays software that lets you manually control texture quality, Anti-Aliasing and AF in all apps. nVidia has nothing. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.

    Thanks chaps :)

From what i just heard, NVIDIA not making their own drivers for the Mac... ATi look the way to go definatley so i can control AA/AF and such (i guess i took for granted that all the cards would have that :D)

What do you think will happen to the Mac range of cards btw? I saw a rumor that the 6800 Ultra had been pulled in prep for the 7800's...

But NVIDIA said they are not making an AGP version of the card. Which leaves the Mac out in the cold too - go them .

Yeah, I wonder why the Ultra has gone.
I you want to drive two 30" Displays, you have to purchase the inferior GT version. Strange.

In Australia the 6800 Ultra DDL is still available for purchase just not as BTO. If I search for nvidia in the Apple Store part of the site it's available there.

edit: forgot the word ultra ;)

2nd edit: I lied the 6800 Ultra DDL has gone now. It was there last night I was considering ordering 1, oh well life goes on.

Both the 6800's (Ultra & GT) are DDL.

But the Ultra DDL is gone, the GT is still there. There also seems to be some delay for the GT too.
