out of curiousity, how would someone outside of Apple go about measuring the size of Apple's catalogue?

The author of the article is an idiot. He suggests that Apple isn't pursuing a streaming option with iTMS because Apple isn't technically capable of streaming music. Is he not aware that the "preview" feature, available for every song, is, in fact, streaming audio? If he doesn't grasp this simple fact, how can he possibly claim to have counted the number of songs available on iTMS?

All songs may not have been available from HOUR one--people saw more available later in the day (the Akami thing in some way?)--but DAY one I can believe.

Talk about making up facts. Fine journalism.

On day one I saw some anonymous forum posters notice that some songs they searched for weren't there--and then with no information, WONDER--not prove--if maybe Apple's 700,000 number meant a total for all three countries. I thought that was a good theory, myself--maybe the Euro stores were starting small.

Turns out that guess was wrong... but that baseless speculation is now being published as fact :D

Some are just out to discredit Apple no matter what they do.
