Not sure when the BTS is going to start.. wondering if I should go ahead and get a refurb now or just wait and get a new one?

Depends if you need the battery life and GPU power of 2013 MBAs. If not, go for the 2012 MBA.

The 2012s still get ~6 hours right? I may or may not connect it to a monitor, but it's mainly going to be used for reading PDFs, viewing video lectures, and word processing. All things I assume the 2012 can handle just fine.

I'm also wondering if there will be a large influx of 2012 refurbs once BTS begins.. and if so maybe I should wait to get an 8/256 or at least 8/128.

Up until a few days ago I had the same question.

Then I ended up in Oregon on a business trip. Went to a BestBuy, they had the new MBA 13, i5/4GB/128GB. Asked for edu price, no problem. Applied the $100 student coupon BB has, no problem. So my total was $950 for the new MBA. Back on the East coast a refurbished MBA 2012 from Apple would have cost me $850 + tax = $910.

So that was an easy decision for me.

The charger hasn't left my house since I got the MBA (11"). I'd say that has made it worth the upgrade from 2012 for me.

Nice! I didn't know BB had a $100 student coupon. If I were to buy it in store, I would have to pay tax.. which is nearly 10% here, so that would essentially cancel out the student discount I think. I'll head down to BB here and see what they can do. Thank you!
