I have an idea for a short film that I'd like to do and given the nature of the film it could only be done as an animated picture. My question is this, if I were to do the bulk of the work in Maya PLE would I later be able to transfer it into Maya Complete or unlimited ? I've never done any serious work with computer modelling or animation and I'm going to have to start from scratch. Are their any books anyone would recommend? Thanks!

nope, they've made it so that the files are not interchangable between the free and paid versions.

    books? how about video tutorials.

it was my understanding that maya ple would also watermark rendered images, so for a movie, that might not be what you want.

I would go to www.cgtalk.com and look in the Maya FAQs there. If there is a way, someone there will know.

    Good luck,

no way around it they are totally different file formats. not quite an easy thing to "hack" around i'd imagine. maybe possible, but why waste your time when most people in the know can find illegal copies of the software anyway and use that. unless of course you're going to buy it, in which case you have the $7000 or so to purchase it now. PLE is meant to learn on it, not use it so people can purchase 1 license of maya unlimited for final renders, and just use PLE to do the other stuff on numerous other machines... that seriously cramps alias's profits.
