I remember reading here that AAC has a bit rate of 1/4 of MP3. After encoding a file with mainly spoken work and a little bit of simple music, I question that HEAVILY.

I encoded at 16Kb which I worked by:

I wanted equivilant of 128KB stereo MP3 in Mono AAC

    128 / 2 = 64KB/s
    64 / 4 = 16KB/s

It sounds BAD... no popping or anything... just low quality.

make sure you are not re-encoding MP3 data. that measn that the AAC codec is cutting off information from the MP3 resluting in lower quality.

If you are recording from a new source and still finding this them try increasing the rate to maybe 32 and see what happens.

    hope it helps.

I have finished my testing (I am encoding from the CD) and I believe AAC = 1/2 MP3

Encoding at 48KB/s Stereo AAC sounds like 96KB/s MP3

Encoding at 64KB/s Stereo AAC sounds like 128KB/s MP3
