I have a 2TB external HDD containing two Filevault 2-encrypted partitions, and 2 non-encrypted partitions. I would like to add a third, non-encrypted partition by splitting an existing non-encrypted partition in order to create a small Linux-based boot disk.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility won't permit me to manipulate the existing partitions other than to destroy them; if I click on an existing non-encrypted partition I am informed that:
There do appear to be undocumented verbs for diskutil that permit the resizing of partitions, but the ultimate result in that thread was that the OP had to disable Filevault on all pre-existing partitions before he could proceed. That's unacceptable in this case.
Does anyone know if this is possible? I have an El Capitan boot disk available if there are additional options available there that would assist.

You may only merge this partition with the one before it.
