The American Film Institute has listed the best movie quotes from US films...

Story here with the top 10 and highlights of others.

No. 1 was Rhett Butler's parting shot to Scarlett O'Hara:"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

Brando had the No. 2 and 3 quotes -- "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse," from "The Godfather" and his "I coulda been a contender" speech from "On the Waterfront."

Judy Garland's Dorothy Gale came in fourth with "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore," from The Wizard of Oz." Two other lines from "Gone With the Wind" made the top 100, Leigh's "After all, tomorrow is another day" (No. 31) and "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again" (No. 59).

At No. 5 was "Here's looking at you, kid," spoken by Rick (Humphrey Bogart) to Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) in "Casablanca."

    Rounding out the top 10:

    6. "Go ahead, make my day," Clint Eastwood, "Sudden Impact."

    7. "All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up," Gloria Swanson, "Sunset Boulevard."

    8. "May the Force be with you," Harrison Ford, "Star Wars."

    9. "Fasten your seatbelts. It's going to be a bumpy night," Bette Davis, "All About Eve."

    10. "You talking to me?", Robert De Niro, "Taxi Driver."

I wonder where Anakin/Darth's "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" will wind up... :p

    Near the bottom I hope.

    And how about "Bueller? Bueller?"

Was in and out of the room while this was on last night.
I think "I'll be back" was No. 37 or something.

No mention of these lines from my favorite all-time movie:

"Get away from her you BITCH!"

"Why don't we put her in charge?"

"Mostly they come out at night. Mostly."

    and

    "Game over man! Game over!"

I was forced to watch number 98 or somewhere around there. My wife and
I were flipping channels when she caught a glimpse of Dirty Dancing!

"Nobody puts Baby in the corner."

I watched the show on CBS last night. My predictions were pretty good, including for the top few. The interesting question is this:
What are the best movie quotes not to make their list?

That's gotta be up there somewhere.

    Edit: Nevermind, it's #36.

How about "Think you used enough dynamite there Butch?"

To answer my own question, I thought "Use the force, Luke" would make the list. Instead, only "May the Force be with you" made it.

what about movie quotes from Forrest Gump? There are at least 3 that could take top spots.

Some lines from adventure/scifi movies that I'd have voted for:

"Where we're going we don't need roads." - Back to the Future

"Must go faster." - Independence Day

"Snakes. Why'd it have to be snakes?" - Raiders of the Lost Ark

The dumbest line has to be #25 from the list:

    I'd have gone for....

    1. "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses." - Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) - Blues Brothers

    2. "That's thirty minutes away. I'll be there in ten." - The Wolf (Harvey Keitel) - Pulp Fiction

    3. "There is no spoon." - Spoon Boy (Rowan Witt) - The Matrix

It seems like there should be at least one quote from The Blues Brothers (e.g. "We're on a mission from God", or even better, "I Hate Illinois Nazis").

I'd have to credit this one to Jurassic Park, because it came first and was much funnier in that context.

Good call on "Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?" That line cracks me up every time I see the movie. Though I might also have to go with "Who are those guys?"

    Other lines missing:

"No....I am your father." (The Empire Strikes Back) That line probably traumatized more children in 1980 than any other....

"I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner." (Silence of the Lambs) Classic....

"We all go a little mad sometimes." (Psycho) I would have put this over "A boy's best friend is his mother."

"Push the button, Max!" (The Great Race) Maybe my family is just weird, but we used to say this one a lot.

"As you wish." (The Princess Bride) Same as with the Butch Cassidy lines. They had William Goldman there. Might as well give him some props.

"I'm cooperatin' here!" (Fargo) My friends and I said this to each other I can't tell you how many times

one for the Brits :) from the original (and better, of course) Italian Job.

Nice to see something from a Marx Brothers movie. Number 53, "One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I don't know." - ANIMAL CRACKERS

Although I could think of some better quotes such as:

I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception. - Groucho Marx

He may look like an idiot and talk like an idiot but don't let that fool you. He really is an idiot. Groucho talking about Chico (Duck Soup)

    Chico: "What's the matter, Mister?"
Groucho: "Oh, we got into an argument and he pulled a knife on me so I shot him." (A Day At The Races)

"I can see you standing over a hot stove, but I can't see the stove" - Groucho (Duck Soup)

Also, going along with Aliens quotes, I like these:

"How do I get out of this *********** outfit?" - Hudson

"... That's it man, game over man, game over! ..." - Hudson

"Is this going to be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?" - Hudson

You've pointed out one of the most important movie quotes of all. Push all those other AFI choices down the list and put this one in the Top 10 where it belongs! After all, which do you hear more: "fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night" or "game over, man"? Case closed.

    "It's only a flesh wound."

"That bunny's got a mean streak a mile wide."

"It's like driving a really big Pinto."

"Looking good, Billy Ray." "Feeling good, Louis."

"It's so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

"Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?" "No. Have you?"
