Airplay Sound Through TV?

Hi. I apologize because I'm sure there are already questions out there that I just cannot seem to find. (I really did try searching.) I am thinking about buying an Apple TV, but had one question:

Say I pull up a video on my Mac and use Airplay to play it through my TV. Does the sound play through the TV as well or will the sound still only come through my laptop speakers?

Since I have my aTV running through the AVR using optical cable, will airplay send surround sound to AVR if I am watching a movie with surround sound on the mac?

I have my ATV 2 running on the HDMI loop back to the surround sound system, so when I airplay as long as I have the surround sound system on the correct source I'll get 5.1.
You can also achieve this by using a optical cable from ATV to surround sound system as the ATV does support 5.1 play back.
Does anyone know if this also works for 7.1...I imagine it would....?
