I was recently at a mac reseller and i waas told that the airport express can extend the range of my network without having a airport network already. I was assured it would configure with my linksys wireless router. Was he wrong or is it compatiable but apple doesnt advertise it as soo??/

He's basically right. If nothing else, you can put it in the other end of the house and have 2 different WiFi access points, I'm not sure if you could get to act like a repeater or not. If you want it to play music, I'm sure the computer acting as a server would have to be in range of the airport and not your linksys router. Same thing if you use the AirPort Express as a print server.

EDIT: It may have other capablities that I'm not aware of that would give it additional capabilities, but I think this is the very least you could expect.
