hello, is it possible to somehow enable this on safari? It seems like the only browser I can do this on is opera. Thanks

do you mean switch tabs with keyboard shortcuts?

    press  + shift + ]

    (command + })

    that?

(also  + { works the other way)

Do you mean like COMMAND-SHIFT-[ or ] to move between tabs?

Beaten by the heroic and autonomous katie ta achoo. :p

command + shift doesnt seem to be doing anything. I just basically want to be able to flip between browsers similar to windows using alt + tab. Opera seems to be the only one that allows this. Thanks again

Command + Tilde takes you between open windows.

Command + Shift + left/right arrows takes you between tabs.

browsing around separate browser windows (all safari.. I'm assuming)

    press command + ` <-- that's not an apostrophe. That's the un-shifted tilde key.

Cycles through all open windows of the same app.

F10 exposé may also be useful here. :)

Can I recommend tabbed browsing. :)

If katie ta achoo gets to go to the prom with Exposé, then I get to take Safari tabs. *Folds arms*

Thanks everybody, that did it. Maybe its because I'm so used to windows but the "command + `" browsing feels really unnatural. I wish I could somehow set it to alt+tab

Maybe I should try thinking differently:rolleyes:

If you want to change it, go to System Preferences, then click on Keyboard & Mouse and select the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. Scroll down until you see the relevant short cut and change it to something else. :)

Just for reference, when you say "alt" around here, you stick out like a sore thumb. :) Try using the key names written on the keyboard, and it's easier to know what you're asking for.

Seriously, though, do yourself a favor and learn about tabbed browsing. You'll never go back. :)

Alt is written on the keyboard, although I know that most of us call it option. Although I agree, using tabs in Safari is definitely a godsend.

Thanks but when I go there it says to double click and hold down the new keys for the shortcut and when I do that nothing seems to happen, any ideas?

Also, what are these tabs you guys speak of?

    Command+T opens a new tab.

/Or you can Command+click a link to have it open in a new tab.
///Or you can Command+Shift+click a link to have it open in a new tab behind your current window.

Just click on the old shortcut and wait for it to go pale blue, then put in the new combination.

Go to the Safari preferences and click on the Tabs button to Enable Tabbed Browsing. It keeps all of your open pages in a single window, much neater IMO. :)

it seems as though it only allows for certain keys to be used for the cycle function, most of the time when I try to put a combination in it gives me the annoying clunking sound

Apple must really not want me to cycle using alt+tab (option+tab) :)

That and with the Shift modifier key are used to traverse links on a page. That can't be changed.

    The Alt key - "Option"
The Apple Key - "Apple" or usually "Command"
    The ctrl key - same.

Apple-tilder (Apple-`) - Cycle through app windows (in almost all apps not just safari) (F10 to Expose these windows)
Apple-tab - Cycle between open apps

    In Safari:
Apple-Click - Opens link in new tab in background
Apple-Shift-Click - Opens link in new tab and selects new tab
    Alt-Click - Downloads link
Apple-t - new tab (and selects tab)

    Apple-Shift-] - Next tab (right)
    Apple-Shift-[ - Previous tab (left)

And go to safari help search "shortcuts" and open "Safari Shortcuts" for about 100 others!

Sorry to re-iterate what has come before somewhat but I thougha little clearing-up would help!

Edit: Oh also, you sound like someone who's opening a lot of windows, so Command-option-w will be helpful to you - closes all the windows of an app.

Thanks James, I think I'm gonna try and get used to tabbed browsing, it seems like a much cleaner way of browsing

Is there anyway of cycling through tabs using one hand? The command+shift+arrow is awkward. Thanks

Only way I can think of is using a multibutton mouse and setting the "extra" buttons for traversing tabs/windows.

Dern, now I want a better mouse...

Granted, I haven't looked at a regular keyboard in a while, but on my powerbook, there's a command button on both sides of the spacebar -- thus making it possible to do a command-shift-[ or ] with one hand.

It is a bit awkward until you give up on using your index finger to press one of the buttons and use your thumb (command), pinky (shift) and middle two fingers ( [ and ] ) to jump around between tabs.
