The only AMD chip the Apple could use right now would be the Opteron. They could offer a "Mac Utra-Pro" with performance maybe 15x the curent Mac Pro. Sun sells a "Sun Fire X4600" with 8 dual core Opteron CPUs (16 core machine) and up to 128GB of RAM. The Sun Fire can run either Solaris, or Linux . In theory there is no reason t could not run Mac OSX.
With four PCI-E slots there is room fo good graphic cards

There is simply no way to build a machine like this using Intel CPUs But how many people would pay the $80K price.

They could do that with only 4 Intel processors (16 cores) in 3 months with a much lower Thermal Design Power.

Apple is NOT about choice. iPod? iTunes. iTunes? iPod. OS X? Mac. Mac? OS X. Etc..

I doubt they're going to AMD ever.

“Knowing Apple, why would they want to be held hostage like everyone else has been?'’

Well Hector, it could be because the Intel chips are beating the piss out of yours right now. . .

Also, I really don't see apple pissing away more R & D money on the maintenance of two motherboard architectures.

Wishful thinking on the part of the AMD chief. Do you think Intel entered into this agreement with Apple, providing them all kinds of resources without some agreement on Intel processor usage? Let's face it, Dell and HP buy more processors in a quarter than Apple does in a year.

A while back nobody hard core would go Intel, it was all about the Athlon64, while I dont think apple will go the AMD route, the option is always there and Intel knows it, most importantly Apple knows it, IF intel drops the ball again Apple can go AMD... either way the competition is good for us as comsumers. :D

Yeah, except, it won't happen again. Intel made the mistake that every market leader makes at least once in its corporate lifetime, it rested too heavily on its laurels. Intel is now in overdrive, with one of the best roadmaps any chipmaker has ever had. I don't foresee Intel losing the lead in the chip market any time soon.
