Hello everyone. I have just ripped an audio cd into apple lossless format for the first time. The sound is perfect and sounds cd quality. However, I have seen that you cannot apply artists' names, albums, dates etc to the files. Obviously I can tag them in itunes, but I would really like to have them tagged at the source. Any help?

Are you sure about this? I just ran the "strings" command over a few lossless files and found the name, artist and other information inside the file. What method where you using to look inside the files?
Try it yourself. read more by typing "man strings" in the terminal.
XLD does this for you when ripping also allows you to edit the data if you do not like what its query comes up with for them, automatically adds to iTunes if you have it set to as well.

You can go with FLAC using EAC for ripping under windows then once you get a Mac use the XLD batch mode to convert to lossless .m4a files. Although you will still probably run into the crappy work around for playing flac in iTunes under windows that you need under OS X as well. Really probably better off using Jaikoz to fix the tags of your existing .m4a, the program can be a little complicated to figure out all the options you can use but worth it in the long run.
