In the release notes for the .4 update, Apple states:

"Addresses an issue in which scheduled items, such as automated backups or Software Update checks, may not work if the computer is asleep at the scheduled time. With this update, the schedule will run once the computer wakes from sleep."

Does this mean Anacron is no longer necessary?

It seems like it is not needed. I'd get rid of anacron and check your logs for the next week or so and make sure your jobs are still running.
