Ok another sleep problem here, though its a bit different than the other posts.

So the last couple nights that I have put my iMac into sleep mode, its been acting wonky. Ill put it into sleep mode and the screen will go out like it should, but the pulsating light won't come on, the fan seems to kick in and not turn off, and the keyboard wont work, and the mouse stays lit. There seems to be no way to kick it out of this mode, as the keyboard nor mouse does anything. Its like its stuck between being on and asleep. Only option I've found is to just hit the power button off, though I'm not sure how good it is for the machine for me to be turning it off in this wierd mode.

Just to note his doesn't happen everytime, as the iMac will end up sleeping like 5 seperate times each day, and so far this has only happened once a day max.

Has anyone encountered this or have any ideas?

This is one of the symptoms I'm having as well. Somewhere between sleeping and active - like Neo in that train station. lol

Are you running 10.4 or 10.4.1?

    I'm running 10.4.1

Any chance you are using a USB external thumb or harddrive?

The reason I ask is that I was having was that when I tried to shut down from the apple menu, everything would disappear except the background and the mouse pointer. After some playing around it seems that my 128MB USB thumb drive was the problem, as it would light up red and never go off when I tried shutting down my computer. Im not sure if this is related to the sleep problem or not, but Im going to try using my mac for a while without the USB drive plugged in. Course now thats a whole nother problem if this is the case, but I guess I could live with removing the USB drive imediately everytime Im done with it.

I'm not using any 3rd party devices except speakers in the regular audio out port (not USB).
I'm now beginning to think that 10.4.1 is the real culprit. I can't remember directly putting my computer to sleep before it. I would always put the screensaver on and it would eventually go to sleep (which I think it still does).
Now I'm wondering if, in its stuck mode, it will still eventually go to sleep if I leave it long enough. Doesn't mattter. I'm on hold with AppleCare right now...

Yeah I think tiger might be the problem. I did some searches on google and found another forum with people having the same sort of problem, as soon as they upgraded to 10.4.1 they were having the sleep issues. I didn't have a chance to see if this worked in 10.4 or not since I upgraded to 10.4.1 like an hour after I installed Tiger.

Hopefully AppleCare will shed some light, was going to call them myself after I tested w/o using the USB drive a bit, but since thats not your culprit I'm worried again since it's probably not the USB drive. Hope you receive some good news from them. Let me know if you find out anything, cause this is killing me. I haven't had an uptime of more than 2 days since I bought this refurb iMac two weeks ago.

Well, they admitted to it being a known problem without a workaround yet. He suggested to play with the energy saving preferences, but that was it. Now, my phone connection sucked but this guy seemed to be in a big rush to get me off the phone (someone has a number of calls to meet per hour or something).
Little less than satisfied with his answer but I can (and will, if necessary) call them every day for the next 1095 days. :D

Yeah this is kind of horrible, guess Ill just be shutting down my computer at night until this is resolved, had I known about this I so wouldn't have upgraded to 10.4.1 yet. But oh well, and I'll join in, a call a day to apple until its resolved! Might as well get some use out of my applecare phone service. :)
