I remember that in OS9 if you (i think) pressed the option key and went to the about this computer in the apple menu, you got a picture of 1 infinite loop.

    Anything like that in OSX?

The command line jokes didn't work for me either. I think they removed them from Jaguar.

I'm able to hear the computer tell jokes.

You guys are speaking to it right? You have to ask it to tell you a joke.

All the speakable jokes, de-xml'd for your pleasure (if knock-knocks are your thing).

    Has anybody mentioned...

...the cookie recipe in emacs? It's sort of an OS X easter egg, since emacs is included with the command line utils...

there was also some thing in Terminal with "Dr. Eliza" and "Zippy the pinhead". you could make them both have a conversation that would turn out very interesting... :D

you could also ask Dr. Eliza questions yourself, and get some interesting responses. :D

i had all the info about it in my old .mbox files that i backed up... but now they don't work with Mail.app. anyone know how i can fix that??

i'll have to try that games thing as well. :D

hey people, i just found the text document i had about Dr. Eliza. here it is. this is actually from an mailing list form Dr Bob Levitus i think...

    "Dr. Mac, meet Dr. Eliza...

Did you know there's a bona fide headshrinker inside your Mac? There is
if you're running Mac OS X. Her name is Eliza and while she's not quite
as smart as some psychiatrists I've known, she's more fun and a whole
    lot cheaper.

To have your own head shrunk, launch Terminal.app, type "emacs" at the
prompt (without the quotes, of course) then press Enter/Return.

The Unix text editor known as EMACS will load; hold down the Shift key
and then press the Esc key. Type "xdoctor" (again, without the quotes),
    and press Enter/Return.

Dr. Eliza should ask you a question now. Type a response, then press
Enter/Return twice. The doctor will ask another question. Type a
response, then press Enter/Return twice. And so on until you're sick of
her. When you are, Control-X, Control-C will quit the emacs editor.

I know. It's kind of a lame SMT (Stupid Mac Trick). And if you've seen
the Eliza program before, (she's been around almost as long as the
Adventure game -- "You are standing on a path..."), you're sure to be
    under whelmed.

While she may be lame, I wanted y'all to know she was there. One never
knows when a free shrink will come in handy.

Feel free to tell her I sent you..."

and after that email was sent out a reder replied with how to get Zippy the pinhead on the scene. :D

"Dr. Mac - Stupid Emacs Trick Redux - Zippy the Pinhead meets Eliza

OK. This is too silly not to share. Last week I showed you how to get
Eliza the Psychoanalyst to reside in your Terminal app and provide
    shrinkage for free.

Since that tip ran, I've received many suggestions for more stupid
terminal tricks, but none more inane than this one, from our friend
Richard, which allows you to have Eliza the Shrink psychoanalyze Zippy
the Pinhead (master of the meaningless gobbledygook):

I enjoyed your recent tip on getting to Eliza via emacs.
It inspired me to do some extra credit work. emacs also
has a Zippy The Pinhead quote generator. I've read that
you can get Zippy and Eliza to have a conversation. I
hunted down the directions and adapted them, and here's how
    you do it:

    To accomplish this feat, type:

    emacs (press Enter or Return)

then hold the shift key down and press the
    escape key, and type

    xpsychoanalyze-pinhead

(When you type xpsychoanalyze-pinhead, emacs will
automatically put a space after the first character, x.
    That's OK.)

And watch the conversation fly by.

Press command period to stop it, so you can scroll
    back up and read.

When I ran it, Eliza eventually got a little mad at
Zippy. Here's an excerpt toward the end of their
    conversation:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't tell me what to do. I am the psychiatrist here!
Perhaps this has something to do with some problems in your
    childhood?

Yow! I just went below the poverty line!

Are you sure that will you see the easter bunny in
skintight leather at an iron maiden concert?

Well, I'm INVISIBLE AGAIN.. I might as well pay a
    visit to the LADIES ROOM...

Possibly some problems at home are because of

    this.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's amazing what happens when you've got the Internet and
too much time on your hands. I think you should post this
trick as a "tip of the day." I think other Mac users would
get a kick out of it. :)

He is too right. If you've got time on your hands, introduce Zippy and
Eliza in your Terminal... I did and here's just some of the insightful
    conversation that resulted:

Awright, which one of you hid my PENIS ENVY?

You mentioned that are you suddenly thinking of a
venerable religious leader frolicking on a fort lauderdale
    weekend?

Barbie says, Take quaaludes in gin and go to a
disco right away! But Ken says, WOO-WOO!! No credit at
    ``Mr. Liquor''!!

Possibly problems at school are related to
    this.

Is it because of your inhibitions that you say you
    want your nose in lights?

I'll be back tomorrow with a useful tip. Really. Until then, here's one
more bit of blather straight from the Zip man:

"Life is a POPULARITY CONTEST! I'm REFRESHINGLY CANDID!!"

i haven't sucessfully done it yet, but i'll give it another shot. :)
