i don't know mixed drinks that well, but what is your recipe for an irish coffee?

...and also, what's the basic difference between whiskey and scotch?

    Whiskey is non-Scotch

Scotch is whisky (no e) which can only come from Scotland.

Here's a story behind Irish Coffee along with their recipe for making it. And yes, their Irish Coffee is fabulous!

Another version of the origins of Irish Coffee, also this with recipe.

    "My" recipe:
2 pats Irish Whiskey or whatever scottish Whisky I have on the shelf, American bourbon is strictly forbidden ;)
    1 part strong coffee
1 part (whipped or unwhipped) cream

Not to different from Norwegian "Karsk":
    1 part coffee
    3 parts bootleg booze
    Cream totally unnecessary
    :D

Incidentally, if you're not a great whisky fan but want a liqueur coffee, try these options.

Coffee with a shot of Drambuie (yes, it's whisky liqueur but slightly sweeter)
Coffee with a shot of Amaretto
Coffee with a shot of Kahlua (a double hit of coffee.. mmmmm)

My great mixing dilemma recently has been what to put with raspberry Absolut. After much thought (and many single shots while I pondered), I've come to the conclusion that it really only works well with some champagne.
